2007年（平成19年）に広島市の「ハグの会」が制定。 日付は「ハ（8）グ（9）」の語呂合わせから。人と人とのつながりを育むハグ（Hug＝抱きしめる）。大切な人に大切であることを伝えるハグ。人を信じ、勇気を与えてくれるハグを多くの人に理解してもらおうと記念日とした。
