Seleucid drachma 1
Based on the Seleucid anchor. Allegedly, when Alexander the Great was asked on his deathbed who should succeed him, he replied, "To the strongest.". Regardless of the story's accuracy, Alexander's death in 323 BC caused the Macedonian Empire to splinter into successor states led by his generals, known as the Diadochi. Seleucus's family had served under Philip II, and Seleucus himself accompanied Alexander's campaigns as an elite infantry commander all the way to India. Following Alexander's death, Seleucus was appointed governor of Babylonia, a position that proved crucial during the Diadochi Wars. During the early conflicts, Seleucus kept a low profile because his territory was small. However, Antigonus Monophthalmus ("the One-Eyed") eventually seized Babylon, forcing Seleucus to flee west to Egypt, where another Diadochus, Ptolemy I Soter, granted him asylum. Supplied with a small force of just 800 infantry and 200 cavalry, Seleucus launched a daring march across Syria back into Babylonia in 312 BC. He reclaimed Babylon to the joy of its populace, marking the official foundation of the Seleucid Empire. During the subsequent Babylonian War (311–309 BC), Seleucus faced off against Antigonid forces. Though frequently outnumbered, his command yielded decisive victories that secured his grip on the Mesopotamian heartland. Following a conflict with Chandragupta Maurya of the Mauryan Empire (305–303 BC), Seleucus concluded a treaty ceding his easternmost territories in exchange for 500 war elephants. He marched these elephants west to Anatolia, joining forces with other Diadochi at the Battle of Ipsus (301 BC) to defeat Antigonus. This victory gave the Seleucid Empire vital access to Syria and the Mediterranean. By the end of Seleucus I Nicator's life, his empire was the largest of the Diadochis, stretching from Anatolia all the way to modern-day Afghanistan, rivaled only by his former ally, the Ptolemaic Kingdom.
