Roman military camps (castra) were carefully planned settlements designed to house and protect the Roman army. Usually surrounded by defensive walls, ditches, and wooden or stone fortifications, they followed a regular layout with streets, barracks, headquarters, granaries, workshops, and administrative buildings. Temporary marching camps could be built in a matter of hours, while permanent forts developed into important military and civilian settlements across the Roman Empire.
