Pushing open the door and stepping through, the sight that greeted me was... surreal. White sands and azure seas stretched out beneath cloudless blue skies as far as the eye could see. In the middle of it all, I was treated to the sight of an outdoor casino. I could see a roulette table, a blackjack table, what might have been a craps table.
Standing in the middle of it all was a tall figure. It was a woman with an aristocratic countenance, with her long blonde hair pulled into a high ponytail. Sharp green eyes with cat-like pupils met my own, and it was certainly a struggle not to try and drink in the rest of her outfit. For one, she was absolutely gorgeous. More importantly, she was wearing a white-and gold bunny girl outfit, with matching shoes and blue hosiery.
... why? Why is Artoria Pendragon, the Bunny King waiting for me in the afterlife?
"Well, tattered little soul," she called out in a teasing lilt when I just sat there, dumbstruck. It was absolutely not because she crossed her arms beneath her bust. Okay, maybe I am just a little gay. "Come to Momma Asmodea and let me get a good look at you."
The name tweaked something in the back of my mind as I made my way over to her. It reminded me of something, but for the life of me I couldn't remember. Just another thing I must have forgotten. Still, if she wasn't actually Artoria Pendragon (Ruler), it probably meant that she was some sort of shapeshifter. Slowly, the entity began pacing around me, looking me up and down with a look of consternation.
"My, but you've had a rough time of it," she crooned. Without warning, Asmodea slipped right up into my personal space and pressed her forehead against mine. Is she checking my temperature? "Mmm, so you like fiction, hmm?" Stepping back, to rest against the blackjack table, she smirked. "Welcome to your afterlife, cutie. Let me explain how this works.
"You have a choice; you can say you're done, and move on to heaven... Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, and all that boring stuff." She rolled her eyes before reaching into her cleavage and withdrawing a coin. "Or you can start over in a new world, or since you're kind of a geek, a fictional world. In this case, we get to have some fun gambling."
I considered my options, watching as Asmodea rolled the coin across her knuckles. Heaven wasn't exactly enticing, since I didn't have any of my memories of friends and family. Would they even recognise me as I am now? Fiction, on the other hand, could either be fun or horrifying. I could be looking at the isekai easy life... or I could get my ass dropped dead in the middle of a deathworld. In that case, wouldn't I just end up back here a lot quicker than before?
Shrugging my shoulders, I cocked my head to the side. "I'm up for a little gamble. How's this work?"
A look of pure delight spread across her face. "Think of all of this like a character creator from one of your video games." She held up the coin. "First up, we determine your sex. Call it right, you pick, call it wrong, and it's up to another flip. Heads, you remain a lady, tails, you're a guy. Fair?"
I nodded. "I call tails." She flipped it, caught it out of the air, and then slapped it down on her other palm. Stepping closer, I saw it was heads. Darn... Again, she flipped the coin and caught it. A sigh of relief escaped me. Heads again.
Seemingly content, Asmodea led me over to the blackjack table. This time, she produced a deck of cards from her cleavage. WHY? Are you just doing this to tease me? A pair of stools rose from the sand on either side of the table, and she took a seat before shuffling the deck. "Now, some people like to have a do-over from childbirth, but some just really have no interest in being a kid again, so here's how this works. We're going to play a hand of blackjack. You can choose to take whatever hand you get as your age, bust for rebirth, or if I win, I'll choose for you."
Grinning, I took a seat down across from her. After sitting around and doing nothing but remembering fanfiction, for all of eternity, this was starting to seem really fun, even if I was quite literally gambling on my next life's identity. Once a pair of cards sat in front of both of us, I turned mine over to reveal an Ace of Spades, and a Queen of Hearts. Asmodea's seventeen didn't even play into things.
The next few games were a bit weirder. Choosing my ethnicity involved throwing darts at a map that sprung up out of the sand, and I ended up snagging East Germany. I lost at rock paper scissors, and Asmodea picked my hair colour: platinum blonde. We skipped the game for my eyes since that was one attribute I still held. Finally, a roll on a roulette wheel with customised slots determined my height: 163cm.
With every one of those games, I felt myself distorting. Skin spread out across my body, and before I could really acknowledge it, I had hair down to my ass. Then I felt myself shrink in height. Any shorter and she'd be able to smother me with a hug. Luckily for me when my body formed, she was kind enough to grant me a sheet for some decency.
"This next part's more of a suggestion, because most people's continuances don't usually consist of the kinds of worlds you're likely to end up on." With a snap of her fingers, a spinner wheel with a bunch of words appeared. Super Soldier Serum, Spider Totem, Voice of the World, Gamer System, Alchemy, Magecraft, Old Magic... Those were just a few. "As such, we're going to give this wheel a go, and it's going to give you a little boost."
When she gave the wheel a spin, it quickly blurred into a black-tinged rainbow that almost made my eyes hurt. I was hoping for something good, though, because if I was going to potentially be in a bad place, I definitely wanted something that'd let me take care of myself. It'd suck to get some form of magic if I were to end up in the 41st Millennium and get put to death for 'being a psyker'.
It slowed to a stop not long after that, and the arrow was pointing at a single word: Herrscher. Oh snap. That could be incredibly good, or incredibly bad. Asmodea looked rather surprised when a small envelope appeared in her hands. She opened it, and withdrew a note and several cards; a frown creased her face soon after.
"It says here that to determine your 'Authority', whatever that is, I need to offer you these cards face-down, and you are to pick one of thirteen," she explained, leading me back to the blackjack table.
Even as she spread them out on the table, it occurred to me that there were more than just thirteen authorities. I never played the game, but I was pretty sure there were a number of Herrschers that appeared in the 'current era' of Honkai Impact's Earth that weren't present in the previous era. Hmm... Flamescion and Rimestar probably aren't there as options, and I am willing to bet that Finality isn't either.
After more than a few moments of silent consideration, I finally reached out and grabbed a card from the middle of the spread. What I saw was a tarot card bearing the image of a crying Kiana Kaslana, the spectre of Sirin seemingly hugging her from behind while whispering into her ear. At the bottom of the card, it read XV – The Devil, Herrscher of the Void.
Before I could even really comprehend what was happening, pink lightning was shooting off of the card. Unable to even release the card, all I could really do was watch in horrified fascination as jagged tendrils of dark pink crept up my arm and towards my chest. Oh, it made my nerves scream in agony, but I could feel the power coursing through me. Strangely enough, it also felt like I was gaining knowledge and instincts... and the feeling that I could hold a conversation in any language thrown my way.
Even Asmodea could only watch in intrigue as the card started to smoke and burn away in my hand. Once the lines on my limb faded away, a bright light began to burn upon my chest. It slowly spread to encompass my entire body, and the sheet I'd been given for modesty turned to ash as well. Once my entire body was aglow, she commented, "I didn't have you pegged as the magical girl transformation type."
A reflective pane appeared before me, but I just shrugged and waited for the light to fade. It wasn't with any certainty, but I had a pretty decent idea of what was happening. After all, manifesting clothes seemed to be well within a Herrscher's abilities, even subconsciously.
Sure enough, as the light began to fade, I found myself clad in a form hugging black bodysuit. White tech-armour, adorned with the odd cruciform markings, protected my upper arms and shoulders, ending in a flexible red brace at the elbow. A segmented white plate protected my vitals, with a white gorget with blue panels protecting my neck, and my boots had red armoured bits that also contributed to the tech-armour look. I wasn't enthused by the high heels, but it felt strangely natural. There were thigh holsters on either thigh, and straps on my right thigh for magazines.
