### **The Three Who Await Judgment** Nobody in the village remembered when the three figures first appeared inside the abandoned manor. They simply stood there. Three silhouettes beneath the old wooden rafters. The first was enormous, crowned by unmistakable horns. An **oni**. The second stood elegantly, several tails spreading behind her like shadows upon shadows. A **kitsune**. The third was shorter and rounder, carrying the unmistakable shape of a tanuki. Nobody could see their faces. Nobody could even tell what colors they wore. The lanterns had long since died, and the moonlight behind them reduced everything to black shapes against the pale mist. Yet everyone knew why they were there. The oni had used his strength to hurt those weaker than himself. The kitsune had deceived humans for years, turning their trust against them. And the tanuki had impersonated others so many times that even he no longer remembered which identity had originally been his. They had each committed different misdeeds. So they had each received the same punishment. **To wait.** No chains. No execution. No exorcism. Only silence. Every midnight, the three would stand before the ancient altar and listen to the temple bell somewhere beyond the forest. *Dong.* The oni would lower his head. *Dong.* The kitsune's tails would become still. *Dong.* The tanuki would stop fidgeting. Then nothing. No judge appeared. No divine voice spoke. Perhaps that was the cruelest part. They were left alone with the knowledge of what they had done. And so, night after night, three featureless silhouettes continued to wait beneath the dead lanterns. Beautiful. Unsettling. And completely forgotten by the world outside. Until one night... the oni finally knelt. The kitsune followed. Then the tanuki. Not because someone had ordered them to. But because, after all those years, they had finally decided to judge themselves.
