In the center sits a small, round ceramic shichirin charcoal brazier, its cylindrical clay body grounded firmly on a planked wooden table. A circular iron wire mesh rests flat across the rim over charcoal chunks that sit in dense, heavy black ink hatching within the firebox. Balanced atop the wire mesh are two square pieces of kiri-mochi rice cake: one mochi is gently swelling with softened corners and cross-hatched char marks across its top face, while the second mochi has ballooned dramatically into a taut, asymmetrical puffed dome, its toasted crust split open along fine tension fissures that release delicate, curling wisps of smoke drifting upward. To the right of the brazier on the table rests a small ceramic plate, an adjacent shallow soy sauce dish filled with glossy dark ink, and a carved flat bamboo paddle lying diagonally with its handle resting against the table surface. Soft directional illumination from the upper left is defined entirely through hatching density, leaving bare white paper for the brightest lit swells of the puffed rice cakes while thick, dark cross-hatching sculpts the cast shadows beneath the brazier, the underbelly of the grill, and the grain of the wooden table. Bold, calligraphic brush contours establish the silhouette of every object, filled with rhythmic, ultra-fine pen cross-hatching for texture and tonal depth, strictly executed in monochrome black ink on white paper with complete absence of color. Quiet warmth.
