She faces the viewer square on, one hip pushed out and her weight settled on her right leg, her spine arched back, both arms flung up overhead with her clawed white-furred animal hands spread wide and hooked mid-gesture, catching the moonlight on her palm pads; her left knee is bent and lifted across, the foot off the ground, thick thigh crossing the frame and her fluffy white-furred cat tail curling up and out to her left, its tip fur lifting in the wind. She is caught in the middle of a laughing, swaying dance step for the viewer: full open-mouthed grin showing both fangs, crimson-mouthed, narrow slit-pupil blue eyes half-lidded and pinned directly on the viewer with a teasing, knowing stare, one faint brow lifted, a small dark blush across the cheeks. Her hair is enormous and electric blue, a wild very-long mane of it blown sideways across the lower frame by the night wind, and beneath the blue bangs her ears stand up dark and furry, tufted, one swiveled forward toward the viewer. Her dark skin is glossy and oiled from throat to thighs, each highlight a hard wet curve running down the sternum, over the swell of her large breasts, across the round of the belly and the deep naveline, and along the tops of her thick thighs, with the oiled sheen catching coldest at the high points and slipping to black in the creases. Barefoot stance, toes gripping the mossy ground, the lifted foot's shadow a soft blurred patch under it. Behind and above her the moon is enormous, far too big, a huge pale silver disc swelling past the top edge of the frame so only its lower curve reads, so close that its light rims every strand of her hair and every furred ear in a thin cold halo. Its silver light is the key: it falls from up and behind her, so her front is lit by the moon's reflected wash off the graves and by the warm low candles, so the cool rim and the warm underlight meet in a bright seam along her jaw and collarbone. Twisted dead trees claw up black and bare through the fog in the middle distance, their branches crossing the moon's face, and the fog drifts in slow layers so that the nearest bubbles of it glow and the far ones go grey. Leaning tombstones slide down the tilted horizon in receding rows, their carved lettering worn illegible and flaking, with crooked wax candles set on three of the slabs, their little orange flames bending all one way in the moving air and guttering small halos into the mist; above, the starry night sky is a deep cold blue-black scattered with sharp stars. The visual space is wide and grave-quiet, her vivid blue and dark skin the only saturated thing in the frame, everything else held to silver, slate, moss-green and bone-white and the candles' small amber. She is a cat girl, so white fur tufts at her wrists and along the backs of her animal hands, at the ear tips and along the tail, and it stays matted and gleaming with the same oil as her skin. Her claws are out and clean. The chosen pose tucks her torso upright and legs crossed so only the tops of the thighs and the bare feet read, every other form framed by the oiled dark of her own body and the cool shift of the moon behind. Rendering stays in the muted vintage palette with soft grain and hard cel-shaded edges of late twentieth-century animation: flat filled shadow shapes, two-tone highlights, a faint dust of film grain lifting the fog. Seductive, moon-drunk.
