Fern is the taller of the two only in the sense that she has been lifted slightly, and the height difference of 173 to 165 is preserved: Stark stands planted on both feet, black-socked ankles showing below the hems of his white trousers, and he has drawn her up onto her toes and partly against his chest so her head rests just below his jaw. Stark's stance is a wide, stable one, weight sunk into his right leg while his left knee bends slightly for balance; his right arm bands firmly around Fern's waist, the flat of his hand spread across the small of her back with the white knit bunching under his fingers, and his left hand cradles the back of her head, fingers slid up into her long purple hair, holding her skull as though it were something that could crack. Fern's body has gone entirely limp and trusting inside the hold: her knees have folded, her feet trail toward the floor with the black tights dark and smooth from ankle to upper thigh, her arms hang slack and loose at her sides, and her head has lolled back against Stark's palm, chin tipped up. Her face is asleep — both eyes closed in soft curves, lashes resting on her cheeks, lips parted a few millimetres with a slow breath, brows relaxed, no tension anywhere in the mouth. The off-shoulder white knit dress sits low across her upper arms, leaving her collarbones and the tops of her shoulders bare, the knit ribbed and softly napped; the little triangular keyhole opens at the centre of her chest and the pale skin shows through the pointed gap, the fabric pulled slightly taut where Stark's arm presses it against her ribs, and the mini hem rides up over her hip where his forearm crosses it. Both of them wear a plain black choker: Fern's a narrow band that sits just above the hollow of her throat, and Stark's a slightly wider one that disappears under the collar of his long-sleeved black shirt where it opens at the neck, the red jacket worn open over it, its collar pushed back off his shoulders by the way he is leaning in and one sleeve creased at the elbow around her waist. Stark's gaze is locked down onto her face and goes nowhere else: red eyes narrowed, lids lowered, jaw set, his mouth a flat serious line and one brow drawn faintly in — not smiling, entirely absorbed, as though he is checking that she is still breathing. A single soft key light comes from the upper left, off the frame, laying a gentle highlight along Stark's red hair, the ridge of his cheekbone and the bare curve of Fern's shoulder, and falling off into a smooth shadow on the right side of both bodies and along the underside of the hold; there is no cast shadow on the floor because there is no floor drawn, and the light simply dissolves into the pale ground behind them. The palette is restrained and cool-leaning: purple, red, black and a large field of soft white and ivory, with the skin kept a warm, muted cream and the whole image low in contrast, no stray saturated colour. His left thumb has pressed a shallow dimple into the pillow of hair at the nape of her neck, and a single loose strand has escaped the blunt fringe to lie across her closed eye. Quiet, tender, safely held.
