Heavy shadow swallows the room behind her: the ceiling beyond a few feet is absolute black; only the rim of the mattress and the nearest fold of the pillow survive as grey shapes. She throws no distinct cast shadow on the ceiling because she is below it; instead her silhouette is a black mass pasted on the blackness. The glow from her irises is the only warm tone in a cold palette of dead grey-blue, ink black and pale skin, with a single note of dull red in her hair and the white of her shirt reduced to a blue-grey ghost at the edge of the frame, the black necktie disappearing entirely into the dark. Heavy film grain lies across everything, coarsening the shadows and speckling the dim ceiling; the frame corners sit heavy and dark in a soft vignette, and a faint horizontal smear of old tape noise is suggested in the darkest band of the image, as if it were a paused VHS frame. Creepy, oppressive.
