She is tiny and chibi-proportioned, and everything about her is bee-yellow and black: her cropped hoodie is pulled up over her head in a soft yellow hood, its hem chopped high at her waist over a blue belt, and beneath it a pair of shorts, her shins wrapped in grey leg warmers, her hands covered in grey gloves. Her short hair peeks out under the hood at her temples; her face tips up toward the lens, blue eyes wide and bright, and she tips her chin up at the viewer with a small open-mouthed grin, one brow slightly raised as if she's caught you looking. Both her gloved hands are clasped behind her back, arms pulling her shoulders square, so her little chest pushes forward and her hood's fabric bunches at her nape. She rocks up onto the balls of her feet, weight forward over her toes, heels lifted clear of the concrete; the concrete beneath her has a scattering of fallen yellow pollen grains, and her feet sit just beside a low concrete planter of marigolds and lavender that fills the midground with yellow-green and blue-green leaves. Small wings of translucent iridescent membrane rise out of the back of her hood and spread wide, catching the sun so their veins show sharp and their edges refract faint amber and violet; in the same air above her head a fat black-and-yellow bumble bee hovers on a level with her hood, its striped body round and fuzzy, its own wings whirring translucent as it approaches the lavender by her shoulder. The camera from above compresses the distance between them: the bee hangs in the top-left foreground, soft in the near field, its shadowed underside a deep amber, and the girl's upturned face is the sharp focus, the planter and pale rooftop tiles falling away in the lower third with an empty sky-blue strip along the top edge. A single high sun from the upper left throws crisp short shadows beneath the flower heads and under her lifted heels, and the light makes her hood's yellow glow like wax while the bee's abdomen goes matte gold on its lit stripe and black in the fold of its segments. The palette is tight: pollen yellow and bee black on the girl and the insect against the cool sun-bleached grey of the terrace and the cool sky, with the marigold yellow returning the hue in the planter and the single green note held in the lavender leaves. The mood is sunny and mischievous.
