The camera sits low and tilted, looking up from the forest floor: a single girl alone among the trees, caught in a sideways hurricane, seen in a cowboy shot from mid-thigh to the crown of her head, the whole frame canted a few degrees so the trunks lean and nothing hangs plumb. She is small in the lower third and the wind owns everything above her -- a rushing corridor of air pouring right to left through the clearing, and every leaf, strand and fold of cloth answers to it at once.
Both her hands are clamped over her eyes, palms pressed flat against her face, fingers spread and dug into her temples, thumbs hooked under her jaw; her elbows squeeze in tight against her ribs. Her forehead is fully bare, the blonde hair dragged straight up and back off it in a long streaming mane that whips past the crown and lifts into the air behind her, the hairband still holding the back of it while the front tears loose; strands blow flat across her knuckles. Blue eyes are hidden behind her fingers -- sight is closed off and the wind is felt instead. Her mouth is pulled into a wince, a tight grimace with the corners dragged down, upper teeth showing, brows pinched hard together over the root of her nose, and a hot blush spreads across both cheeks and the bridge of her nose, the colour deepening toward the ears.
She fights the gust on the diagonal: her weight is thrown back onto her heels, hips pushed forward to counterbalance, spine arched away from the blast, one heel skidding half a step to keep her upright. Her blue dress and its frilled capelet are pasted flat against her front by the onrush and snapping out behind her in hard horizontal ridges, ribbons streaming. The long skirt is the centre of the struggle -- the wind has driven the hem up in a fast rising billow that exposes white panties and the tops of her thighs, and because both hands are locked over her eyes she cannot tug it back down; the cloth is caught in the act of being dragged upward, pleats standing out, and her whole body has tilted and clenched in response to it. Low in the frame the skirt hem cracks and shudders in the wind.
Leaves tear off the trees in a continuous diagonal stream, tumbling upward and right to left, some slapping against her skirt and arms and sticking there before being ripped away. Behind her the forest recedes in depth: nearest trunks sharp with bark texture, moss and a rim of low ferns bending flat away from the wind; further ranks smear into long horizontal streaks of motion blur, and thin pale speed lines rake across the midground and the sky-corridor between the crowns, drawn taut in the direction of the gust. The trees bend away from the wind, not into it; high branches are combed over to one side and a thin veil of loose leaves hangs in the air above her.
Light comes from behind and slightly above through the canopy, so her silhouette is rimmed and the hair glows at its edges while her face, still turned down and into her hands, sits in soft shade lit only by bounce from the pale ground. Palette: deep wind-combed forest greens and shadowed browns, the flat pale blue of her dress, a single hot blush pink, and the fresh green-white of the airborne leaves. Deep focus on her hands, forehead and grimacing mouth; the forest simplified into directional bands of green and grain, everything below her knees dissolving into moving streaks. Flustered, buffeted.
