A single figure in an ornate black top hat stands centered, seen in a low three-quarter angle from below that compresses her frame against the cool pale field behind her. Her grey hair is swept into a single side bun at her left temple, a few short strands falling loose across her brow; her grey eyes look levelly toward the viewer with a composed, faintly amused expression. The buckle bow of red-brown ribbon is tucked into the hat's brim band, tilted to her right. Her white high-collared shirt stands crisp at her throat, fastened with the white ascot, and a slim brooch set with a deep blue gem sits at the ascot's knot. Over the shirt she wears a black vest, a black waistcoat beneath it, and a black coat with long sleeves hanging open at the front, its cuffs falling just past her wrists. Black pants taper to the ground. A blue ribbon trails from the back of her coat collar and lifts slightly in an unseen draught, its ends curling. Her right hand rests at her hip, fingers half-curled against the coat's edge; her left arm hangs loose, weight shifted onto her right leg, left knee slightly bent. A thin cool haze softens the ground at her feet, pale watercolor light bleeding into the empty background. Atmospheric perspective keeps her figure crisp while distant edges dissolve into haze. Quietly dramatic, softly painterly.
