1girl, solo, korean school uniform, dongbok, white blouse, dark navy sailor collar with white stripe, long red neck ribbon, pleated skirt, black knee socks, black loafers, school front gate, school gate, outdoor, daytime, winter, from below, low angle, cowboy shot, looking to the side, looking away, flushed cheeks, red cheeks, blush, steam from mouth, breath, smoke from mouth, exhaling, half-closed eyes, cold, bare hands, empty hands, overcast sky, bare winter trees, chain-link fence
The camera sits low, tilted up from just above the pavement so the school gate towers and the girl reads tall against an overcast winter sky. She stands at the school front gate, weight settled onto her left leg with her right knee loose and slightly bent, hips canted, her right hand hooked loosely around the strap of the bag hanging at her side and her left hand tucked up into her opposite sleeve cuff; her chin is lifted a little, eyes angled off to the left of the frame into the middle distance rather than at the lens, lower lids soft and half-lowered in an expression caught between shivering and pleasure. Her cheeks are a hard, glowing red across both cheekbones and the bridge of her nose, the colour of skin bitten by cold air. From the corner of her parted lips a thin ribbon of smoke curls out and drifts up and to the right, breaking apart in the still air a hand's width from her mouth, its edges going translucent; a second faint wisp has already thinned out past her jaw, and the cold has left the plume hanging close instead of dispersing. She wears the dongbok: a white collared blouse buttoned to the throat under a dark navy sailor-style collar banded with a single white stripe, its long red ribbon hanging loose and slightly lifted by her breath, a pleated skirt below and black knee socks meeting black loafers planted on the frost-dusted pavement. Behind her the gate rises in painted steel bars; the left post carries a vertical signboard whose lettering is weathered and illegible; bare winter branches and a chain-link fence run behind the bars and recede into grey haze, giving depth without stealing the foreground. The light is flat, cool and sourceless from a high overcast sky, an even grey-white wash that leaves no hard cast shadow but puts a soft rim on the collar stripe and the ribbon's fold, the reds of cheeks and ribbon the only saturated notes against the navy, white, black and cold grey all else is built from. Her hair moves barely at all, only a strand lifted at the temple, and the smoke is the one thing in the frame actually travelling. wintry, quietly charged.
