The Demon King, Kamui Gakupo, and the Demon Queen, Megurine Luka, walked side by side at the very front. Yet, without anyone quite noticing when, the two had gradually begun to quicken their pace. The demon generals following close behind soon noticed the distance slowly widening. One of the generals was about to speak up. But Gakupo raised a hand. "There's no need to keep up." The general immediately stopped in his tracks. "Your Majesty?" Luka let out a soft laugh. "Just keep the formation as it is." "Gakupo and I will go ahead for a while." The generals exchanged glances, then bowed respectfully. "As you command." And so the Demon King and Queen continued forward. Behind them, the great army of the Hundred Demons kept its steady, orderly pace, following without haste. Before long, a gap had opened between the two groups. Luka gazed at the familiar valley ahead. "Every year, once we reach this point, you walk a little faster." Gakupo answered calmly. "Others should have already arrived up ahead." Luka nodded. "That's true." The Hundred Demons' Night Parade had never belonged to just one procession from the Capital. The demon realm was vast. Beyond the Capital of the Netherworld, there were many other demon kings, yōkai lords, mountain masters, and leaders of the Hundred Demons from every region. On the night of the parade, each of them led their own kin on their own procession. And this valley was precisely the place where all the Night Parade processions were most likely to meet. For this reason, Gakupo and Luka came ahead of the others every year. Not to stand guard. Nor to prepare for confrontation. But to welcome the leaders arriving from afar. After all, if several Night Parade processions arrived at once, together with tens of thousands of demons gathering behind, the valley could easily become crowded. By going ahead, the two of them made it easier to leave enough space for everyone. Luka looked toward Gakupo and said with a smile, "I wonder which clan will be the first to arrive this year." Luka's lips curved upward. "They're here." Through the thick mist, a new procession of the Hundred Demons' Night Parade was slowly making its way toward where the two of them stood. Luka osservò la valle familiare davanti a loro. "Ogni anno, arrivati a questo punto, tu affretti sempre il passo." Gakupo rispose con calma. "Davanti a noi dovrebbe già esserci qualcuno." Luka annuì. "È vero." La Sfilata Notturna dei Cento Demoni non era mai appartenuta a un solo corteo proveniente dalla Capitale. Il regno dei demoni era vastissimo. Oltre alla Capitale del Mondo Sotterraneo, esistevano molti altri re demoni, sovrani yōkai, signori delle montagne e capi dei Cento Demoni di ogni regione. Ogni anno, nella notte della sfilata, ciascuno di loro guidava il proprio popolo in un proprio corteo. E quella valle era esattamente il luogo dove tutti i coretei della Sfilata Notturna avevano più probabilità di incontrarsi. Per questo motivo, Gakupo e Luka arrivavano ogni anno prima degli altri. Non per fare la guardia. Né per prepararsi a uno scontro. Ma per accogliere i capi giunti da terre lontane. Dopotutto, se più cortei della Sfilata Notturna fossero arrivati contemporaneamente, insieme alle decine di migliaia di demoni radunati dietro di loro, la valle sarebbe facilmente diventata affollata. Andando avanti per primi, i due si assicuravano di lasciare spazio sufficiente per tutti. Luka guardò Gakupo e disse sorridendo: "Chissà quale clan arriverà per primo quest'anno."
