It stood before the stage, turned back to look at everyone, gave its fluffy tail a gentle shake, and let out a clear, ringing cry. "Kyuun—" The tanuki immediately patted its own belly. Thump, thump. As if answering their call, the lanterns that had begun to dim now lit up again, one by one. Golden light stretched along the approach path, crossed the stone steps, passed through the torii gate, and drew a warm circle of glow across the entire shrine grounds. Miku blinked. "They want to keep going." Mio watched the fox, unable to help a smile. "Looks like it." Before anyone else could speak, Teto had already started tapping her feet to the rhythm, her twin tails bouncing with each movement. "Let's dance again!" MEIKO laughed and shook her head. "You really do have energy to spare." "A festival is meant to be danced until your heart's content!" KAITO laughed and clapped twice. "Then let's not keep everyone waiting." The drums sounded once more. The fox led off with light, graceful steps, and the tanuki wobbled along after it. The big leaf on its head kept threatening to slip, swaying left and right with every step, yet miraculously never fell. Len couldn't help laughing. "It's really pushing its limits today." "Worry about your own tail first." Rin reminded him with a smile. "I mastered that ages ago." No sooner had he said it than, turning around, his tail nearly swept his own foot, forcing him to hop hastily aside. "...That didn't count." Everyone burst out laughing. Amid the laughter, Mio raised her sleeve, and Miku naturally picked up the next movement. Luka spun gently, her skirt blooming like petals in the night breeze; Gakupo turned in time with the drumbeat, his wide sleeves tracing an elegant arc. On the other side, MEIKO clapped crisply to shift the beat, and KAITO caught the rhythm right after; Teto spun once on light feet, and みお laughed and turned along with her, the ornament on her hat swaying slightly, her white cat tail flicking up. No one was deliberately leading. No one was deliberately chasing to catch up. Whenever someone spun, another naturally picked up the beat; whenever a sleeve lifted, someone else would carry the step forward in the next instant. The fox wove between everyone. Wherever it took a step, the ground lit up with a small cluster of warm fox-fire, as if marking time for the dance. The tanuki, patting its belly all the while, sent glowing leaves drifting up into the night sky. The leaves floated down slowly with the drumbeat. Some brushed past Miku's palm, some slipped by the edge of Mio's spreading sleeve, some spiraled between Luka and Gakupo, and others rode the breeze on toward Len, Rin, MEIKO, KAITO, Teto, and みお. At some point, no one was paying attention anymore to whether the steps matched what came before. Someone spun an extra turn following the drums; someone laughed and changed direction; someone reached out to catch a floating leaf of light, only to release it back into the night wind on the next beat. The fox darted nimbly between everyone. The tanuki trotted along behind, laughing all the while, busily steadying the leaf on its head. This time, even the fox couldn't help glancing back at it, tail swaying happily side to side, as though laughing at how clumsy and adorable it looked. Watching it all unfold before her, Mio suddenly realized she had long since stopped counting the beat. All she could hear was the drum, the bells, and the laughter rising and falling all around. She took a step forward. Miku took a step too. Everyone else naturally followed on, picking up each other's movements, so that the whole dance flowed like a river. Fox-fire and glowing leaves wove together, drifting through the moonlight. Sleeves fluttered, tails swayed gently, smiles reflected in the lantern light. This time, no one needed to wait for anyone else. Because everyone was already dancing, together, as one. --- 日本語 拍手がゆっくりと鳴りやみ、夜は再び静けさを取り戻した。 けれど、狐は立ち去らなかった。 舞台の前に立ち、振り返って皆を見つめると、ふさふさの尻尾を軽く振り、澄んだ鳴き声をひとつ上げた。 「コォーン——」 狸はすぐに自分のお腹をぽんぽんと叩いた。 とん、とん。 まるでそれに応えるかのように、すでに柔らかく灯りを落としかけていた提灯が、再びひとつ、またひとつと灯り始めた。金色の光が参道に沿って伸び、石段を越え、鳥居をくぐり、神社の境内全体に温かな光の輪を描いていく。 Mikuは瞬きをした。 「まだ続けたいみたい」 Mioは狐を見つめ、思わず笑みをこぼした。 「そのようね」 誰かが口を開くより先に、Tetoはすでにリズムに合わせて足を踏み鳴らしていた。ツインテールが動きに合わせて跳ねる。 「もう一回踊ろうよ！」 MEIKOは笑いながら首を振った。 「あなた、本当に元気ね」 「お祭りは思いっきり踊ってこそでしょ！」 KAITOは笑って二回手を叩いた。 「なら、皆を待たせないようにしないとな」 太鼓の音が再び鳴り響く。 狐が軽やかな足取りで先頭を切り、狸もふらふらとそれについていった。頭に乗せた大きな葉っぱは相変わらず落ち着かず、足取りに合わせて左右に揺れながらも、奇跡的に落ちることはなかった。 Lenは思わず笑ってしまった。 「今日は限界に挑戦してるな、あいつ」 「自分の尻尾の心配をしなさいよ」 Rinが笑いながら注意する。 「そんなのとっくにマスターしてるさ」 言い終わるか終わらないかのうちに、振り向いた拍子に尻尾が自分の足を払いそうになり、慌てて横に飛びのいた。 「……今のはノーカンで」 皆が一斉に笑い出した。 笑い声の中、Mioが袖を持ち上げると、Mikuも自然に次の動きへとつなげていく。 Lukaは柔らかく身をひるがえし、スカートが夜風の中で花びらのように広がった。Gakupoも太鼓のリズムに合わせて振り向き、大きな袖が優雅な弧を描く。 もう一方では、MEIKOが軽快に手を打って拍を変え、KAITOがすぐさまそのリズムを受け継ぐ。Tetoは軽い足取りで一回転し、みおも笑いながらそれに合わせてくるりと回った。帽子の飾りがかすかに揺れ、白い猫の尻尾がふわりと立ち上がる。 誰も、あえて先導しているわけではない。 誰も、あえて追いつこうとしているわけでもない。 誰かが身をひるがえせば、別の誰かが自然と拍子に合わせ、誰かの袖が翻れば、次の瞬間には誰かが踊りを続けていく。 狐は皆の間を縫うように駆け抜けていく。 一歩踏み出すたびに、地面に小さな狐火がぽっと灯り、まるで踊りの拍子を記すかのようだった。 狸はお腹を叩きながら、光る葉っぱを一枚また一枚と夜空へ舞い上げていく。 葉は太鼓の音に合わせて、ゆっくりと舞い落ちていく。 あるものはMikuの手のひらをかすめ、あるものはMioの広げた袖のそばをすり抜け、また幾枚かはLukaとGakupoの間で旋回し、やがて風に乗ってLen、Rin、MEIKO、KAITO、Teto、そしてみおのもとへと流れていった。 いつからか、誰も踊りの型がさっきと同じかどうかなど、気にしなくなっていた。 太鼓の音に合わせて余分にもう一回転する者もいれば、笑いながら向きを変える者もいる。舞い落ちる光の葉を手で受け止めては、次の拍でまた夜風の中へと放つ者もいた。 狐は軽やかに皆の間を駆け抜けていく。 狸もにこにこしながらその後をついて走り、走りながらも懸命に頭の葉っぱを支えている。 今度は狐までもが思わず振り返り、尻尾を楽しげに左右に揺らした。まるで、その不器用で可愛らしい姿を笑っているかのように。 目の前の光景を見つめながら、Mioはふと気づいた。自分はもう、拍子を数えていなかった。 耳に届くのは、太鼓の音、鈴の音、そして絶えず湧き上がる皆の笑い声だけ。 彼女は一歩を踏み出した。 Mikuも一歩踏み出す。 他の皆も自然と互いの動きを継いでいき、踊り全体がまるで川のように流れていく。 狐火と光る葉が、月明かりの下で入り混じりながら舞う。 袖が翻り、尻尾が優しく揺れ、灯りに笑顔が映える。 今度は、誰も誰かを待つ必要はなかった。 なぜなら、みんなすでに、一緒に踊っていたのだから。
