- Gorgons, more precisely termed Medusae in scholarly parlance, are an all-female species possessing innate petrification magic channelled through their eyes. Upon closer inspection, several distinguishing features reveal themselves: Hair colouration varies among blacks, purples, greens, and pinks. These vivid hues are directly influenced by their diet of mushrooms and other fungi found in dark climates. Multicoloured scales run over their arms, legs, and necks, catching the light with an iridescent shimmer. Despite this, they look remarkably human in overall form. Their skin is very pale, almost luminous — a consequence, I believe, of their subterranean existence. They typically wear scant clothing — just enough to cover themselves minimally — owing to the warm, humid environments of their caves and the practicality of life underground. When in the presence of other species, they frequently wear half-masks or eye coverings to prevent accidental petrification — a gesture of goodwill that is, tragically, seldom appreciated. While their eyes themselves are fully covered, they manage to get around using incredible scenes of touch, sound, and taste. Diet & Habitat The gorgon diet consists primarily of mushrooms and other fungi, which thrive in the damp, lightless environments they call home. It is this fungal diet that produces their distinctive hair colouration — a fact I was able to confirm through careful observation of juvenile gorgons whose hair had not yet developed its full pigmentation. Gorgons are forced to live in caves and subterranean caverns, not by preference, but by persecution. Their uncontrollable petrification ability renders them pariahs among other races, and they retreat underground out of pure necessity. They favour dark climates where fungi thrive — deep forests, mountain hollows, and coastal grottoes. Behaviour & Society Gorgons are frequently persecuted by other races who cannot — or will not — comprehend that the petrification gaze is involuntary. Village militias, self-styled heroes, and bounty hunters have driven gorgon populations to the brink of extinction in several regions. As a result, they live profoundly isolated lives in their caves, largely out of necessity rather than choice. Those few gorgons I was able to communicate with expressed deep loneliness and a longing for contact with the outside world — a longing tempered always by the knowledge that a single unguarded glance could kill. Reproduction Gorgons are capable of reproducing with other species. However, offspring are always gorgons, regardless of the other parent’s species.
