Grootslang

The Grootslang (Dutch for "Big Snake"), is a legendary creature of South African folklore said to exist within Richterveld within a cavern guarding gem riches. It's typically depicted as a gigantic snake with an elephants head. According to local legend, the creature’s primary lair was the "Wonder Hole," a reputedly bottomless pit in the Richtersveld. This association with wealth and peril is reinforced by a creation myth which suggests that the Grootslang was a singular being created by the gods at the dawn of time. Fearing their own creations, the gods splitted the beast into two seperate beast, namely the 'snake' and 'elephant' but one Grootslang managed escape the division and has lived in Richterveld since. The origins of Grootslang remains a mystery, according to the speculation of journalist Lawrence G.
