Atavistic Shamans take advantage of both, merging strength and pliability together in a predatory symphony that makes them more than just another mortal. While they do not have the Begotten’s full might, they tap into Primordial magic nonetheless, drawing on humanity's long forgotten primeval nightmares and suppressed dreams of things that go bump in the night. Lives Atavistic Shamans brush along the Primordial Dream’s borders, but it doesn’t draw them in like Beasts or compel them to violence like Heroes. Violence is still a fixture of shamans’ lives, however, as these ritualists evoke fear and dread to summon their bestial magic. Unlike many supernatural beings, shamans want mortals to stumble upon them, so they can harvest fear and dread and turn it to power. That said, a reckless shaman is a dead shaman. Hunters and Heroes are just as much a risk to atavistics as they are to other magic users, but that’s the price they pay. Shamanistic rituals already require careful planning, so security preparations are just one more consideration. Atavistic rituals take a wide range of forms, but all must evoke utmost dread in onlookers. One shaman bathes in worms and spiders at midnight, leaving the hotel door ajar to tempt CHAPTER ONE: CUCKOOS IN THE NEST guests to investigate the strange sounds and smells. Another stalks hikers on misty days, mimicking lupine calls and snarls in the fog to drive them into a Locus infested by spirits. Whatever form they take, the shaman’s rites must evoke fear, enough for the Primordial Dream to churn and surge. It is this power that the shaman harvests and stores to work their magic. Shamans align themselves (mostly metaphysically) with Begotten Families. While they don’t actually belong to the Families, they draw on those archetypes to work dread miracles. Many Beasts regard shamans as curiosities because of this, though some consider them frauds, arguing that shamans attempt to claim part of their Family’s legacy without proper ties. For their part, shamans view themselves as simply conduits for the Primordial Dream, distinct but overlapping with the Begotten. Through their connections to these Primordial archetypes, shamans draw on Atavisms like a Beast — with some key differences. While Atavisms are intrinsic and permanent for the Begotten, shamans must expend their magical charge to draw forth the Primordial Dream. In exchange, shamans have more flexibility, calling upon whatever powers they need as long as they have the energy. As well, while Begotten Atavisms are typically subtle (when not merged with their Horror), shamans have no such luck. Their magic causes blatant physical changes to their bodies for the duration, causing no physical harm but inevitably inducing bizarre and abhorrent sensations. Dread overcomes onlookers when a shaman evokes Eye of Heaven, perhaps turning their face into an empty pupil, or when worms burrow out of their skin from Infestation. Finally, Shamans can also call out through Primordial Dream to entreat with those who were once Beasts. They can reach out to both Rampant and Unfettered, although with obvious risk and differing attitudes. Reverent shamans view themselves as priests to these Primordial beings, functioning much as Heralds do for the Begotten. More domineering individuals see their ability to call these creatures as evidence of shamanistic superiority. They seek to command the Rampant and Unfettered, subjugating them to their will. Still others view those supernatural beings as fundamentally equal, seeking to maintain a semblance of harmony and partnership between both parties.
