In the immediate foreground the fluffy mat fills the bottom edge -- thick pile printed with roses, daisies and small pastel baby motifs, its fibers compressed into shallow dents beneath every knee, hip and elbow that rests on it. At the center of the mat four girls in matching pastel onesies sit and lie tangled together in one cuddle pile: the pink-haired girl with the high ponytail sits upright at the left, knees drawn in, both mittened hands clasped at her chest, her huge lace bonnet framing a face gone scarlet, tears standing in her pink eyes and one fat drop running down her cheek as she peeks up at the viewer through her lashes. The blue-haired girl leans against her from the right, one arm hooked around the pink girl's waist, cheek pressed to her shoulder, her own blue eyes wet and her mouth working around the huge pastel pacifier between her lips, its shield flush to her chin. Behind them the blonde girl with twin tails lies on her side along the mat, propped on one elbow, the other mittened hand reaching across to pat the pink girl's knee, a shy half-smile breaking through her tears. The purple-haired girl lies fullest-length across the front of the pile, head pillowed on the blonde girl's thigh, gazing straight up into the lens with brimming eyes and a wobbling lip. Each wears a colorful onesie cut with precure outfit details -- puffed short sleeves, a heart-shaped brooch at the chest, a little skirted ruffle at the hips -- stretched taut over an enormous multi-layer diaper whose bulk rounds out the seat and pushes the girls' hips high off the mat; the diaper's plastic cover crinkles and catches the window light in bright specular streaks, and its floral print blooms across the padding. A huge frilled lace bib fans over each chest, the bonnet's lace edge droops past each temple, safety mittens swallow both hands into rounded padded paws, and the restraining booties with trailing bow ribbons turn their feet into soft rounded blocks. In the midground a low table with a lace-edged tablecloth sits to the left, a small chair pushed in beside it; to the right a changing table stacked with folded cloths, and beyond it a towering crib with turned posts and a ruffled bumper. Baby toys -- blocks, a plush rabbit, a ring stack -- scatter across the mat, and a colorful blanket lies rumpled where a foot has kicked it aside. The back wall carries a tall window, its curtains drawn wide, and through it the sunshine background pours in warm gold; dust motes drift in the shafts. Every surface in the room is pink -- walls, ruffled trim, shelves crowded with colorful decorations, bunting strung between the crib posts -- with the window light the single source, striking the left sides of faces and the tops of bonnets while soft shadow pools under the cuddle pile and behind the crib. Palette held to candy pink, cream lace, pastel floral and the glossy white-blue of plastic covers. Anxious, tender.
