Her weight rests on her straight left leg, the right knee bent with the toe of her bare foot pressed to the ball of the other foot; a short towel-damp hank of hair slides forward over her shoulder as she lifts a white plastic hair dryer in her right hand up near her ear, its nozzle aimed at the wet dark mass of her hair, while her left hand hangs low at her hip with the black power plug pinched between thumb and forefinger, its cord looping slack down toward the floor. Her head is tipped a fraction down, chin soft, and her eyes are half-lidded and unfocused, gazing out through the rain-beaded glass toward the balcony, the wet railing, and the deep bruised storm clouds stacked over a distant grid of apartment towers; her lips are closed in a quiet, unforced calm, no smile required, no performance. Long dark hair, heavy with water, clings in separate dripping strands to her neck and collarbone, with vivid purple streaks running through it that catch the cold window light at their edges; small silver studs sit in a row along the rim of her visible ear. She wears an oversized black t-shirt that hangs off one shoulder and drops past her hips, the hem skimming her thighs, its front carrying a single blocky white print of abstract letterforms that read as pure graphic shape rather than any legible word, the fabric wrinkled in soft grey folds where the window light rakes across the chest and where it bunches at the shoulder. Behind her the room layers back in warm depth: the desk lamp on a cluttered desk throws a low amber pool across the computer monitor's dark bezel and the keyboard beneath it; above the desk a shelf of stacked objects and a small fan-shaped standing fan blur into soft-edged bokeh; on the right wall a bed sits low with a crumpled duvet and a small round octopus plushie slumped against the pillow; an air conditioner unit hangs high on the wall above patchwork wall posters whose printed surfaces stay entirely abstract imagery with no legible lettering anywhere; pale curtains hang pooled at the side of the glass, one panel lifted slightly by the draft of the open slider. The light is strictly two-sourced: icy blue daylight from the balcony behind her rim-lights her hair, shoulders and the curve of her calf while leaving her front face and chest in cool shadow, and the little desk lamp supplies the counter-warm yellow that pools on the desk, the bed and the underside of the shelf -- the two temperatures meeting in a soft grey-green transition across the middle of the room, with soft cast shadows and ambient darkness gathering in the corners and under the furniture. Her wet hair drips: a single dark bead runs down the nape of her neck and disappears into the collar, and a faint damp sheen darkens a small patch of the shirt's shoulder seam, while the rain on the glass refracts the balcony rail into a broken, refracted line behind her profile. The hair dryer's barrel shows a fine faint ghosting of color fringing along its plastic edge where the cold window light hits it, cinematic shallow depth keeping her profile pin-sharp while the room softens behind. Quiet, tender, domestic calm.
