On the open ice in the middle distance, three human figures walk and their paths almost touch but none of them will choose a direction. The nearest has wrapped himself in tattered grey woolen rags and walks barefoot, toes curled against the burn of the ice, one arm half-raised as if starting to call out and then thinking better of it; his brows are drawn up in the middle and his mouth hangs slightly open, eyes darting left and right. Their breath plumes white, and every plume leans the same single way, the only wind there is. Beneath the ice, pressed up under the surface, the drowned are still moving. A woman in a shredded white cotton shift floats directly below the walking barefoot man, her palms flat against the underside of the plate, fingers splayed, mouth open in a long scream that produces one thin trapped bubble; her face is a mask of suffocation, cheeks hollowed by held breath, eyes wide and fixed up at the soles of his feet he does not look down at. Further off a man in a torn cream tunic turns slowly over under the ice, one hand dragging along the frozen ceiling, his lips blue, a faint mist of exhaled air spread flat and dissolved against the plate above his face. The ice doubles them: their bodies are hazy and their colours softened where the thickness warps them, while the walkers above cast sharp black shadows onto the surface and onto the faces of the dead. Light comes from one source only: a low, sourceless green-black glow from the pit's far walls behind Satan, which rims his horns, the tops of his wings and the crown of his blonde head in cold light, catches the wet edges of his mouths, and leaves the near ice in darkness. Beyond the glow the deep is absolute and without a floor. The palette admits cold blue, dirty white, and the three seeded hues of his eyes, nothing warm anywhere except the red of the blood smeared at his lips, which freezes and blackens almost at once. In the far background, at the limit of the ice, a few more tiny figures stand motionless, their faces blurred and their silhouettes simplified, and the distances between everything are huge and empty. Numb, dread-soaked.
