character: satan_(mythology) frozen lake, ninth layer of hell, Satan in the center of the lake, chewing on Judas, Marcus, and Gaius, three figures in his mouths, multiple heads, people walking on the ice, confused expression, unsure, lost, bare feet on ice, tattered grey woolen rags, frayed brown burlap cloak, worn leather sandals, people trapped beneath the ice, suffocating, torn cream linen tunic, shredded white cotton shift, hands pressed against the underside of the ice, wide shot, from above, high angle, dutch angle, demon horns, wings, blonde hair, long hair, green eyes, red eyes, blue eyes, dark sky, no horizon, colossal scale, cold blue palette, breath fog, vast negative space A high, tilted wide shot looks down and across the ninth layer of hell: a black windless vault above, and beneath it one enormous frozen lake filling the frame edge to edge, its surface a dull grey-blue plate of ice that stretches to a horizonless distance in every direction, ringed far off by the rim of a colossal pit whose walls climb out of frame. In the exact center of the lake Satan stands, gigantic beyond scale, his torso rearing up out of the ice so the frozen surface breaks around his waist in a jagged white collar of shards. He is a mass of pale flesh and demonic anatomy: three heads on thick necks, the left crowned with long blonde hair, the center with short black hair, the right with blue-black hair bound in twintails; three pairs of eyes burning green, red and blue down at the ice below; two horns rising from each skull; and two great bat wings folded half-open behind him, their edges furred with frost. His three mouths are working, each clamped around a human torso, and each body hangs upside down out of the jaws by the waist so the legs dangle and kick weakly: Judas in the left mouth, Marcus in the center, Gaius in the right, all three stripped to bare skin gone the grey-white of frozen meat, all three with their heads wrenched to the side and their hands clawing uselessly at his teeth. He braces against the ice on one boulder-sized hand, one knee driven into the frozen surface, and his weight has driven a spiderweb of cracks out from the point of impact; the cracks catch the only light in the scene. On the open ice in the middle distance, three human figures walk and their paths almost touch but none of them will choose a direction. The nearest has wrapped himself in tattered grey woolen rags and walks barefoot, toes curled against the burn of the ice, one arm half-raised as if starting to call out and then thinking better of it; his brows are drawn up in the middle and his mouth hangs slightly open, eyes darting left and right. Beyond him a figure in a frayed brown burlap cloak drags worn leather sandals that scuff and skid on the slick, hunched forward, head swivelling back over one shoulder toward the giant he does not dare look at fully. A third in a torn cream linen tunic has stopped dead, hands loose at his sides, and stares at the ice with a slack, lost expression like a man who has forgotten the way home. Their breath plumes white, and every plume leans the same single way, the only wind there is. Beneath the ice, pressed up under the surface, the drowned are still moving. A woman in a shredded white cotton shift floats directly below the walking barefoot man, her palms flat against the underside of the plate, fingers splayed, mouth open in a long scream that produces one thin trapped bubble; her face is a mask of suffocation, cheeks hollowed by held breath, eyes wide and fixed up at the soles of his feet he does not look down at. Further off a man in a torn cream tunic turns slowly over under the ice, one hand dragging along the frozen ceiling, his lips blue, a faint mist of exhaled air spread flat and dissolved against the plate above his face. The ice doubles them: their bodies are hazy and their colours softened where the thickness warps them, while the walkers above cast sharp black shadows onto the surface and onto the faces of the dead. Light comes from one source only: a low, sourceless green-black glow from the pit's far walls behind Satan, which rims his horns, the tops of his wings and the crown of his blonde head in cold light, catches the wet edges of his mouths, and leaves the near ice in darkness. Beyond the glow the deep is absolute and without a floor. The palette admits cold blue, dirty white, and the three seeded hues of his eyes, nothing warm anywhere except the red of the blood smeared at his lips, which freezes and blackens almost at once. In the far background, at the limit of the ice, a few more tiny figures stand motionless, their faces blurred and their silhouettes simplified, and the distances between everything are huge and empty. Numb, dread-soaked.
