Both her hands are gathered together at the top of her knees, fingers interlaced around the transparent umbrella's slim shaft; the umbrella tilts back over her shoulder so its clear canopy fills the upper left of the frame, ribs ghosting through the plastic, rain beading and tracing down the taut film. Her back is gently rounded, weight settled on her hips, chin lifted slightly. She is in profile: one blue eye visible with a calm lowered lid, lips closed and soft, cheek faintly flushed. Her twin braids hang heavy and long over one shoulder and down the front of her white short-sleeved shirt, black ribbons of hair unspooling at the tips, while loose green-black strands along her forehead and the braid ends blow forward in the wet wind. The sailor collar lies flat across her back and shoulders; the long black pleated skirt spreads over the stone in a fan of folds down to her calves. In front of her knees, in the crook where the puddle gathers, float fallen white, blue and purple hydrangea petals and small clusters of the bloom, a single green leaf resting on the water. The puddle is a mirror: her silhouette and the umbrella break into rings where a drop struck, the ripples spreading in slow perfect circles only where the water is shallow enough to be disturbed by gravity. The trunk of a great tree rises behind her, wet bark dark and slick, while beyond it the background dissolves into an abstract wash of cool greens and blue mist, hazy layered depth and a low horizon lost in atmospheric perspective. Backlighting drives the image: the storm light comes from behind the tree and behind her, so the umbrella film glows, her braid edges and shoulders catch a thin bright rim, and her face and chest sit in soft shadow lit only by the pale water bounce. Sharp bright highlights snap along the umbrella ribs, the puddle, and the wet stone; glowing particles of mist drift in the light shafts. Colour is a disciplined triad of green-black, white and storm blue, cut by the hydrangea's white, cobalt and violet and the faint warm bloom of the backlight. Varying line weight, confident linework with sharp delicate edges, smooth detailing on hair and water, light motion lines etched into the falling rain and the wind-blown strands, fine bloom haloing the bright edges. Cinematic, ethereal and hushed. quiet, tender
