On the far left, Eru Chitanda stands with her weight planted on her back heel, torso turned in and angled forward so her body shields the smaller girl. She wears a glossy black leather jacket that catches the wet neon light of the alley, and beneath it a red inner shirt glows like a chili pepper. Her lower half is in blue jeans, and her long black hair sweeps forward over her left shoulder. Her left arm wraps firmly around the smaller girl, hand pressing flat against the back of her ribs, pulling her close. In her right hand, held low and slightly back from the embrace but still visible, is a Colt M1911 pistol, its dark steel gleaming with a single pinpoint of lamplight. Her purple eyes look down and sideways at the girl she embraces, expression hard and serious, protective. In the center of the frame, pressed into Eru's side and partially hidden by the curve of the leather jacket, is the smaller girl, Nishino Flower. She is short and her head is bowed, pressed into the older girl's shoulder. Her short blunt-banged hair is pinned back with a pink hairband, and a black bow hair ornament droops forward with her head's lowering. She is crying: tears track down both cheeks, and her face is screwed up with the effort. Both her hands grip the front of the red inner shirt, knotting the fabric, and her feet are on the wet pavement, one slightly ahead of the other. Her posture is collapsed into the embrace. On the far right, half out of frame, a third figure, Lapis, is seen in silhouette and three-quarter back-view, only partially turned away. Her fair-skinned hand is visible reaching toward the pair, but her fingers hover without touching, hesitant. Her voice is silent. A tall streetlamp throws a single pool of amber light from behind the pair, casting their long shadows forward toward the camera and leaving the far ends of the alley in deep darkness. The ground is wet, and a thin stream of rainwater runs along the alley's central seam, reflecting the amber light in a broken line. The only sound is rain and a soft, held breath.
