On the left, the smaller man leans in hard toward the right, weight thrown onto his front foot, shoulders hunched forward, chin thrust up; his rugby headgear sits low on his forehead with the ear pads framing his cheeks and the chin strap cutting a taut line across his jaw, and messy black hair bursts out in spikes above and behind the helmet rims. His mouth is wide open mid-shout, brow crushed down over glaring eyes, a sheen of sweat running from his hairline down his temple and catching the light along his jaw. His red tracksuit jacket collar rides up at his throat and its sleeve is pushed back at the wrist. His right hand is thrust forward between the two men, a black G-pen gripped between thumb and index finger, nib slanted toward the other man like a blade, knuckles tight and pale. On the right, the huge man looms a head taller and a shoulder wider, torso squared but tilted down toward his opponent, muscles straining the fabric of his jacket patterned all over in a diamond argyle grid, the diamonds distorted across the swell of his chest and the crook of his arm. His long black hair is slicked straight back from a high forehead into a heavy mass behind his head, a rough stubble beard shadows his jaw and chin, and a round red ball sits fixed on the very tip of his nose, glossy and catching a pinpoint highlight. His eyes glare down hot and wide, and his lips are peeled back in an evil yet delighted grin, teeth bared, the joy of the fight and something unhinged and adoring all crowding the same expression. A G-pen juts from his right fist while his left arm brings a sheaf of manuscript paper up against his ribs, the pages fanned and slightly bent by the grip, white rectangles of ink-lined panels visible on the top sheet. Between and behind them the manga workspace is on fire: stacked desks and drawing boards glow orange, flames lick up from the edges of the room, loose manuscript pages curl and lift in the rising hot air, embers drift upward and draw bright streaks against the smoky dark. Firelight comes from low and behind, rimming both men in hot orange along the shoulders, cheekbones, helmet rim and the slicked-back hair, while their faces stay in warm shadow with the sweat highlights picking out the strongest points. Ink-black shadow and blazing orange-red dominate, with the red of the tracksuit, the red nose ball and the diamond grid as the only other colors allowed. Heavy black focus lines radiate from the point between their locked eyes and cut across the background in sharp converging strokes, and the linework is itself split between thick gekiga hatching and the wild elastic energy of shonen manga. Sweltering, ferocious.
