Her weight is on the ball of her right foot, her black geta lifted off the stone and about to come down; her left leg is extended back and slightly bent, toes pointed, so that the white over-knee sock pulls taut over her calf and the band bites a shallow soft crease into the underside of her thigh where it grips. Both arms are flung up and out, left arm higher than right, right forearm slightly bent as if she has just let go of the hem; the red-and-white miko sleeves and the long white-and-red cloths hanging from the skirt's waist snap out sideways in three separate fluttering layers, the lowest strip curling round toward her hip. The miniskirt lifts and flares into a shallow dish, pleats opening, and the nine white fox tails — each tipped at the last hand-span in deep crimson — spread in a slow rolling fan behind and above her shoulders, notched by the moonlight so the nearer tails catch a bright rim and the farther ones go dim gray-blue. Her long white hair has swung across her face and streams back to the left, some strands lifted clear of her shoulders; her white fox ears stand upright, each red tip lit bright at the very point, the near ear swiveling slightly toward the camera. She looks down over her chin at the lens with a crooked, delighted grin — open mouth, upper teeth showing, one eye pinched shut in a wink while the other red eye is wide and steady — a faint warmth of blush high on both cheeks, chin tilted and a loose fall of hair crossing her brow. The tails are fluffy and heavy with correct physics: each one thickens toward the middle, tapers sharply at the crimson tip, and the wind pushes all nine in the same direction so the red ends trail lower than their bases; one low tail brushes behind her calves. The whole stairway runs away above her head as a receding ribbon of dark stone, worn glossy in the center of each tread, a few white petals and dry leaves resting on the flat of every step but blown clear off the risers and the sloping edges — snow-petal physics as a tell of the wind. Behind and far above her, the tall vermilion torii stands slightly off-center right, its uprights washed to muddy brown by the cold light, its crossbeam cutting clean across the moon. Lanterns along the steps glow small and warm amber, the only warm light in the frame; the moon above the gate is a cool silver wash from behind her, so her face and the front of the miko outfit sit half in the shine bouncing up off the pale stone, her long shadow thrown forward down the stairs toward the camera, her hair and tails rimmed in white. Palette is locked to white, deep crimson and black with the shrine stone's cool blue-gray and the lanterns' little amber, nothing else admitted; the red collects in the eyes, the ear tips, the tail tips, the trim of the outfit and the waist cloths; the white in hair, ears, socks, tails and fabric; the black in geta and shadow. The detail budget goes to her face, the crease the sock digs into her thigh, the rim-lit fluff of the near tails and the flare of the pleats; the stairway, the lanterns and the gate stay simple dark masses behind her. The composition's leading lines — stair edges, torii uprights, the fan of tails — all point at her face. Playful, luminous.
