More to See

1 girl, solo, side view, tank top, white tank top, wet clothes, sweat-soaked shirt, see-through, sports bra, denim hot pants, sitting, engawa, traditional japanese house, rural summer, sweating, sweat on skin, sweat on face, hair clinging to face, tan lines, panting, open mouth, tired, fed up, lowered eyebrows, narrowed eyes, looking away, looking to the side, glass cup, barley tea, half full, condensation, water drops, heat haze, shimmering air, summer, bright daylight, from side, close-up, arms, bare arms, thighs, wooden floor, shoji, veranda edge, Side view: a girl sits on the wooden engawa of an old rural Japanese house, her body turned in profile to the camera and facing left, the sunlit garden out of frame before her. She is planted low on the edge boards, weight sunk onto her right hip, both legs folded to one side with her near knee up and her heel tucked against the plank; her right palm presses flat on the warm wood behind her hip, taking her weight, while her left hand rests slack on her raised knee, fingers loose and parted. Her chin is tipped back a little, mouth open, lips parted in a slow pant, a strand of damp hair stuck flat across her cheek and another glued to her neck; her eyebrows angle down and her narrowed eyes look off past the veranda posts into the middle distance, away from the viewer, low-lidded and weary, a small wince at the outer corner of the mouth. She wears a white tank top gone translucent with sweat, the fabric clinging in cling-wrapped folds to her back and ribs, the strap cutting a wet line across her shoulder, the dark shape of a sports bra reading clearly through the soaked cloth; denim hot pants sit low on her hips, and the bared skin of her shoulders, upper arms and thighs carries sharp tan lines -- pale straps and short-sleeve and short-hem bands against deeply sun-browned arms and legs, the sweat on that browner skin catching the light in a fine sheen. At her far side, within easy reach on the planks, stands a glass cup half filled with amber barley tea, its outside furred edge to edge with fat condensation beads, a few having run down and pooled in a dark ring on the wood, the tea inside still and the droplets refracted with tiny inverted glints of sky. Behind her the veranda's shadowed interior: dark timber posts, a shoji screen with paper panels, deep cool shade under the deep eave, and beyond the open edge a blazing sunlit garden whose light bounces up as a hard warm fill on her jaw and forearms. The sun rakes from the upper left, outside the frame, striking the top of her shoulder, the ridge of her knee and the rim of the glass, leaving the near side of her face softly shaded and throwing a short sharp shadow of the cup onto the boards. Above the garden and around the veranda edge the air ripples with heat haze, the far fence and foliage wobbling and bleaching out at the horizon, their outlines smeared as if seen through moving warm glass -- the haze the only thing in the frame that visibly moves. Palette of bleached white, sunburnt brown, indigo denim and the deep cool brown of old wood, high summer contrast. The light on the veranda's shadow side is soft and ambient, while the garden beyond is thrown into overexposure; the wet sheen keeps a single bright highlight per droplet. Detail budget on her face, the sweat-soaked fabric, the tan lines and the beaded glass; the wooden planks and the shoji simplified into a few confident boards and panel lines. Oppressively still, quietly exhausted.
