1girl, solo, dark brown skin, dark skin, sweat on skin, sweaty, glistening skin, tan lines, sports bra, navy blue sports bra, wet clothes, sweat-soaked clothes, shorts, sitting, sitting on engawa, side view, profile, panting, open mouth, tongue visible, fed up, annoyed, lowered eyebrows, narrowed eyes, half-closed eyes, looking away, looking to the side, downcast gaze, sweat-damp hair, hair sticking to face, hair clinging to neck, traditional japanese house, engawa, wooden veranda, rural summer, countryside, heat haze, shimmering air, bright sunlight, glass cup, barley tea, half-full glass, condensation, water droplets on glass, background, outdoors, day Side view from the girl's left, her body in full profile seated on the wooden engawa, knees drawn up, one shin flat along the boards and the other foot planted on the step below the veranda edge; her weight sits back on her left hip, torso slouched, one arm braced behind her with the palm flat on the warm wood, fingers slightly spread, the other forearm resting across her raised knee and hanging loose at the wrist. Her head tips back a little, chin up, mouth open, jaw slack, lower lip drawn down as she pants, a faint glisten at the open lips; brows pulled low and knit, eyelids narrowed to a hot squint, and her eyes angle off past the camera to the lower right, toward the sunlit garden she is not enjoying, meeting nothing and no one. Sweat beads stand out in the hollow of her throat, along the collarbones, on her shoulders and the small of her back, tracked by a few slow runnels; the navy sports bra is soaked dark and clings in damp patches across chest and ribs, the shorts damp at the waistband; strands of her hair lie plastered to her temple, her cheek and the nape of her neck, the rest pulled into damp clumps. Broad bands of paler skin cut across her shoulders and upper arms where a top sat, and a strap-line crosses her back, reading plainly against the deep brown of her body. Beside her right hip, on the boards within easy reach, sits the glass cup, condensation beaded so heavily that droplets run down the outside and pool in a ring on the wood, the barley tea a clear amber-brown filling it a little over halfway. The veranda's plank lines run away to the left, a dark shaded interior behind her with a shoji screen slid partway open, and beyond the eaves the rural summer yard tilts out of focus -- a scorched grass verge, a low stone wall, green hills furred with trees, everything wilting in the glare. The air carries a visible heat haze above the sunlit garden, edges of the hills and the wall wavering and doubling in the rising shimmer. Strong, single, high afternoon sun comes from the far left out of that yard: it rakes along her arm and shin, burns a hard rim down her face and shoulder, throws her shadow and the cup's shadow sharply across the boards to the right, and leaves the veranda's inner half in swallowed, cool shade; where the light meets the boards the wood looks bleached, and the condensation ring on the glass catches one hot white glint. Palette stays in deep umber-brown skin, sun-bleached wood, olive and chalk-dry greens, the navy of the fabric and the amber tea, with a white blown-out sky. Light held in a warm high-contrast register, skin kept glossy and believably heavy with moisture, sweat and heat haze carrying the detail budget over the background, listless and oppressive.
