no humans, scenery, from below, wide shot, dutch angle, boarding school headmaster's office at night, oak-paneled walls, tall arched window, full moon and cold night sky beyond the glass, heavy green banker's lamp on the desk, brass desk lamp glowing, long bookshelves, brass ladder rail, leather armchair, ticking grandfather clock, fireplace with dying coals, pinboard with faded notices, dark green and oxblood and old gold palette, neon cyan moonlight against amber lamplight, halftone dot shading, thick black outlines, graffiti scrawl marks, pop-graphic composition
Looking up from low in the doorway, the headmaster's office at night rises in a steep dutch-tilted wide shot: the tall arched window in the far wall leans with the frame, its leaded panes holding a deep cold sky and one full moon that casts a hard silver parallelogram across the wooden floor and lands on the near edge of the great desk. That desk runs across the midground at the base of the window, its top buried in stacked exercise books, an open ledger and a blotter, and on its left corner a green banker's lamp throws a warm amber pool that stops well short of the cold moon patch, so the desk is divided into two lights that do not mix. Behind the desk the high leather armchair is empty, its back turned square to the window and pushed slightly askew from the desk, the seat cushion still holding a shallow dent. Bookshelves climb the wall at the left of the frame with a brass rail and hooked ladder running up past the top of the picture, their spines a ragged run of dark green, oxblood and dull gold. In the right of the frame a fireplace holds a low band of dying coals that throws a thin red-orange underlight on the hearth tiles and a smear of soot on the stone above. Between the shelves hang framed portraits and a pinboard of notices, their lettering worn and illegible, and the grandfather clock at the corner is mid-swing with a sliver of moonlight running down its glass case. The floorboards carry the moon patch at full brightness while the corners of the room beyond both lamps stay in absolute darkness; only the lamp-lit and moonlit faces are saturated, the lamp's amber eating into the green upholstery while the moon's silver edges every object nearest the window, and the whole frame is broken up by coarse halftone dots in the shadows, thick black contours on the furniture, and a scatter of spray-paint scrawl marks climbing the wall behind the shelves. Dust turns slowly in the moonbeam. Empty, waiting, held-breath quiet.
