Low-angle cowboy shot tilted slightly off level, the girl filling the left two-thirds of the frame while the Halloween town rises behind her right shoulder. She is caught mid-hop on her right foot, left knee lifted and left toe trailing, weight driving up through the right hip, tail-bone tipped back so her two small horns and the silky blonde twin-tails toss upward behind her. Both arms are hugged around a great spill of wrapped candy pressed to her bare midriff — the candy heap is gripped at the bottom with her right forearm, her left hand splayed across the top of the pile, fingertips denting the cellophane — and one round lollipop sticks up past her cheek. Her off-shoulder blouse has slipped off both shoulders so the wide neckline rides along her upper arms, leaving her collarbones and shoulders bare and the hem cut high above her navel; the black and red checkered skirt kicks out and up with the hop, and black bloomers show at the top of her thighs beneath it. Her small bat-like wings flare half-open behind her shoulders, catching the pumpkin light at their thin membranes. Chin tipped up and slightly turned, eyes wide and bright, open-mouthed laughing grin, cheeks flushed, gaze thrown down toward the viewer at the bottom of the frame as though she is showing off the haul.
Behind her, the town reads as a receding street of crooked gabled houses, shopfronts hung with paper bat garlands, cobwebs stretched across doorframes and a row of lit jack-o'-lanterns on doorsteps and window ledges — their inner candlelight doing all the work: warm orange uplight striking the undersides of her chin, wings, candy pile and the inner faces of the pumpkin shells, while everything turned away from the pumpkins falls into deep blue-violet shadow. Round-bodied little ghosts with stubby arms float at mid-height down the street, and small chibi bats, some perched on the garland strings and some mid-flutter, populate the gaps between the roofs; both stay small and simple so she keeps the focus. The palette is fixed: warm pumpkin orange and candle cream against a cold blue-violet night, her yellow-blonde hair and the red of the plaid and of the candy wrappers as the only saturated mid-tones. The lollipop's cellophane throws one small hard highlight of the pumpkin flames back toward the camera while the candy wrappers behind it stay matte — light that has travelled through the wrapper arrives softer than the flame that made it. Festive and bright.
