芥川竜之介の短編小説「魔術」がモチーフです。誰でも使える魔術があります。術師によれば、魔術は高度な催眠術であり、誰にでも使える魔術とのこと。ただし、教えるには、１つだけ特殊な条件があります。「欲のある人間には使えない」。主人公は、「欲を捨てることができる」と言い、教えを請います。術師は、「分かりました」と答え、一晩泊まる旨を、召使いに伝えます。果たして結果やいかに。イラストは、噴水の水を魔法を使い、金貨にみせています。人が、金貨に群がり、狂喜乱舞していますが、すべては催眠術のなせる業。術師は、その様子をどのような気持ちで眺めているのでしょうか。正気に戻ったら・・・・。というイメージです。小説は当時の雰囲気を感じられ、術師も現代の感覚とは異なります。短い作品なので、キンドルで安く買えます。暇つぶしのお供にという推し作品です。 Magic That Turns Water into Gold Coins This piece is inspired by the short story "Magic" (*Majutsu*) by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa. It depicts a form of magic that anyone can use. According to the magician, this magic is actually a sophisticated form of hypnosis—a technique accessible to anyone. However, there is one unique condition for teaching it: "It cannot be used by those driven by greed." The protagonist claims he can "cast aside his greed" and asks to be taught. The magician replies, "Very well," and instructs his servant to prepare for an overnight stay. What, then, is the outcome? The illustration depicts the magician using his art to make fountain water appear as gold coins. People are swarming the coins in a frenzy of wild delight, yet it is all merely the work of hypnosis. With what feelings is the magician watching the scene unfold? The image captures the moment just before—or perhaps after—reality sets back in. The story evokes the atmosphere of its era, and the magician possesses a character quite different from modern sensibilities. As it is a short work, it is available cheaply on Kindle. I highly recommend it as a way to pass the time.
