landscape composition, monochrome, sumi-e, ink wash, black ink on white paper, 1 bird, white java sparrow, round-bodied bird, thick pale beak, perched, side view, profile, standing on bamboo fence, weathered bamboo fence, traditional japanese house eave, small feeding bowl, millet seeds, bold thick brush outlines, fine hatching lines, feather texture, bamboo texture, visible brushwork, dry brush strokes, no humans, entirely monochrome, no color A horizontal sumi-e ink painting on white paper, seen in flat side view: a single round-bodied white Java sparrow perches in the middle-left of the frame on the top rail of a weathered bamboo fence. The bird sits in profile facing right, its plump body rendered as a clean white reserve of bare paper enclosed by one bold, thick, loaded-brush contour, the black line swelling where the brush pressed and tapering thin where it lifted. Its head is turned slightly down toward the right, one small dark eye a single wet dot, the stubby pinkish-grey beak drawn in two short fine strokes, closed. Both feet grip the bamboo rail: two thin ink lines for the toes wrap the cylinder of the cane, the claws curling over its far edge, so the perch rod visibly carries the bird's weight and sags nowhere. Long tail feathers and the folded wing are described only by fine parallel hatching lines in dilute grey ink, no outlines, so the plumage shading is a soft wash of short hatch strokes that follow the curve of the back and thin out toward the belly. Behind and above the bird, the deep shadowed underside of a traditional Japanese house eave cuts diagonally across the upper right of the frame: one heavy dark wet-brush band for the beam's edge with the rafter ends beneath it suggested as short vertical hatching, fading into pale wash toward the top margin so the paper's white shows through as sky. The bamboo fence runs left to right across the lower third, its canes drawn with thick broken contour lines and dry-brush gaps, the nodes as tight horizontal strokes, the hatching along each cane left unaligned with the neighbour to suggest weathering; the nearest cane is darkest, the receding canes lighter and thinner, and behind the fence the rest of the composition is empty white paper with a faint graded wash at the top. Small enough to stay quiet, a shallow round feeding bowl rests on the fence's lower rail to the bird's right: an ellipse in two strokes, its hollow a soft grey wash, and scattered millet seeds as tiny distinct dots spilling across the rail, a few caught in the seam where rail meets post. The only light is the paper itself — every grey is thinned ink, every white is untouched sheet — and the darkness collects in the eave, under the bowl, and in the hatch strokes along the bird's flank, with no cast shadows beyond the soft wash beneath the bowl. The palette admits black, dilute grey, and the white paper, and nothing else. Composition leaves the upper-left quadrant open as negative space, the bird's gaze directing the eye rightward toward the bowl. Quiet nostalgia.
