Their hair ornaments stay exactly as they are, no added jewellery or extra accessories. Each gaze lands on another of the group -- the red-black-haired girl looks up at the white-haired one, who looks back over her shoulder, the brown-haired one watches the first two, and the pink-haired one looks down at all of them, with answering half-smiles and a lifted brow. The light source is the summer sun high and behind-left of the camera: it strikes the tops of their heads and shoulders, soaks the white blouses almost to white at the shoulder seams, lays bright bars of dappled leaf-shadow across the concrete stairs, and drops the undersides of chins and the fronts of skirts into cool open shade. The shadows of the leaves are sharp-edged on the upper treads and blurrier on the lower ones where they fall on the shaded faces -- the only bright pool sits on the landing where the sun passes the gap in the foliage. Around them a schoolyard of deep green foliage, a green athletic field beyond the rail, and a hard blue sky; a chain of dark leaf-shadow moves across the landing as a breeze stirs the branches, and every stitch of it stays legible on the pale concrete. Palette: white and cool grey uniforms, saturated green, hard blue, warm sunlit skin -- nothing else admitted. The white blouses keep a crisp textured weave in the sun, flat filmic cel shading elsewhere. Bright, easygoing, mid-summer.
