On that ground, in black ink and diluted grey washes, the painting is composed: the ghost woman kneels in the upper two thirds, her body a white shroud rendered as unpainted silk held by thin nervous brush contours, the fabric falling in long vertical folds from her shoulders; at her waist a single flat knot of cord, and that cord alone is a deep blood red, the only colour on the entire scroll, a few fibres of it bleeding slightly into the damp silk around it. Her black hair is a long straight mass painted in dense wet strokes, parting at the centre of her forehead and hanging past her shoulders down over the white robe, the ink strands thinning to dry-brush wisps at the ends. Her face is small, oval, refined — high thin brows, a narrow nose, a small mouth — and horrifying: the brows pulled up at the inner ends, the eyes wide open with the irises small and the whites showing all round, the mouth open a crack as if about to speak a plea, the whole face tilted slightly toward the viewer while the body stays square. Below her waist the robe does not end in legs; the white fabric and the ink contours together dissolve downward into a tapering plume of grey wash, wide at the hips and narrowing to a curling thread that fades out before the lower border, no feet, no knees, the wash pooling darker where the brush lifted. To her left, in the lower third of the scroll and slightly behind the plane of her trailing robe, stands the well: a rectangular stone shaft drawn in angular dry-brush strokes with a chipped top rim, one corner broken away and a crack running down its face, its dark opening a flat black mouth, the ghost's fading tail passing just in front of its near edge. Light comes from the room, not the painting: a low warm lamp at the right throws a soft raking glow across the plaster and makes the scroll's silk slightly luminous, while its own shadow falls leftward behind the roller; the ink inside the painting does not respond to that light at all, staying flat and matte, so the red cord reads as the one living thing on a dead surface. Palette: aged cream, bone white, sumi black and grey washes, one red. Quiet dread.
