The audience, which had been filled with chatter only moments before, was quickly swallowed by darkness. Then, in the next instant— the enormous stage screen lit up. Lights on both sides of the stage came on at the same time. Gakupo was the first to appear from the left. His long purple hair lifted in the stage breeze, with the two long strands in front of his ears falling all the way to his waist. He raised one hand and waved toward the audience. “Are you ready?” The cheers immediately grew even louder. On the opposite side, Luka stepped onto the stage as well. Her long pink hair glowed softly beneath the golden lights. She smiled and waved to the audience. At last, the nine-member concert had officially begun. But— the center position was still empty. That was where Lily was supposed to make her entrance. The audience quickly noticed. Len immediately whispered, “Don’t grin so obviously.” “I’m not.” “You’ve been trying not to laugh this whole time.” “So have you.” MEIKO glanced at both of them. “Shh.” They immediately fell silent. After a brief moment of darkness— a single golden spotlight fell from above. The platform slowly rose. At last, Lily appeared at the center of the stage. The audience exploded into thunderous cheers. Luka smiled and casually looked away. “Luka?” “Yes?” “Did you just avoid looking at me?” “Of course not.” “You absolutely did.” Teto was already close to breaking. Her shoulders kept trembling. Lily immediately turned toward her. “Teto.” “Pfft—” “You laughed!” “I didn’t!” “You definitely did!” Teto finally burst into laughter. “Hahahaha! Sorry! At last, Lily couldn’t help laughing too. “That’s so mean.” She lowered her gaze toward the cake. The golden decorations sparkled beneath the stage lights. The candles had not been lit yet. But she could already imagine what it would look like later. “So...” Lily raised her head. “Is the concert still going to continue?” Miku blinked. “Of course.” Gakupo continued, “This is only the beginning.” “The beginning?” Lily froze again. And Lily still had no idea— that the cake in the center of the stage was only the first surprise of the night. --- 日本語 開幕からサプライズ 会場の照明が、一つ、また一つと消えていった。 ついさっきまで話し声で満ちていた客席は、あっという間に暗闇へ包まれる。 次の瞬間。 巨大なステージスクリーンが光った。 画面中央から金色の線が広がり、黒い背景の上で星明かりのように咲いていく。 ドラムが鳴り響く。 続いて、聞き慣れたメロディーが流れ始めた。 客席から一斉に歓声が上がる。 ステージ左右の照明が同時に点灯した。 最初に左側から現れたのはGakupoだった。 長い紫色の髪がステージの風に舞い、耳の前から伸びる二本の長い髪束は腰まで垂れていた。 Gakupoは片手を上げ、客席へ向かって軽く振る。 「準備はできてるか？」 歓声はさらに大きくなった。 反対側からはLukaもステージへ姿を現した。 長いピンク色の髪が、金色の照明を受けてやわらかく輝いている。 Lukaは笑顔で観客へ手を振った。 続いてTeto。 「今日は静かになんてしてちゃだめだからね！」 赤いドリルツインテールが、動きに合わせて大きく揺れる。 そのすぐ後ろからMikuも登場した。 青緑色の長いツインテールが、スポットライトの中で美しい弧を描く。 「みんな——こんばんは！」 MEIKO、KAITO、Len、Rinも、それぞれ別の方向から次々とステージへ出てきた。 こうして九人のライブは、ついに始まった。 けれど—— 中央だけが、まだ空いていた。 そこは本来、Lilyが登場する場所だった。 客席もすぐにそれに気づいた。 すると突然、巨大スクリーンにカウントダウンが表示される。 5 4 3 Rinが中央の昇降ステージをちらりと見て、思わず口元を緩ませた。 Lenがすぐに小声で注意する。 「そんなにわかりやすく笑うなよ。」 「笑ってないよ。」 「さっきからずっと笑いそうになってるだろ。」 「Lenだって同じじゃん。」 MEIKOが二人を横目で見た。 「しーっ。」 二人はすぐに黙った。 カウントダウンが続く。 2 Mikuがそっと一歩後ろへ下がる。 Gakupoも何も言わず中央へ視線を向けた。 1 ステージの照明がすべて消えた。 ほんの一瞬の暗闇のあと—— 真上から一本の金色のスポットライトが降り注いだ。 昇降ステージがゆっくりと上がっていく。 そしてついに、 ステージ中央にLilyが現れた。 客席から割れんばかりの歓声が響く。 とても長い金色の髪が背中へ流れ、ステージの風にやさしく揺れていた。 黒いヘッドバンドも照明の下ではっきり見える。 今夜のために新しくデザインされた黒と金のアイドル衣装を身にまとい、金黄色の装飾がスポットライトを受けてきらめいていた。 Lilyはマイクを持ち上げる。 「みんな——！」 そう言いかけた、その瞬間。 突然、言葉が止まった。 「……え？」 本来なら何もないはずのステージ中央前方。 そこに—— 巨大な三段のケーキが置かれていた。 黒と金の装飾。 金色の星。 黒い薔薇。 そして、とても目立つプレート。 LILY Lilyは固まった。 ゆっくりとマイクを口元から離す。 もう一度見る。 やっぱりケーキはそこにある。 「……待って。」 思わず小さく一歩後ろへ下がった。 「なんでここにケーキがあるの？」 客席から一気に笑い声が上がる。 Lilyはますます混乱した。 「いや、ちょっと——」 左側を見る。 Gakupoは何事もなかったかのように前を向いていた。 Lilyは目を細める。 「Gakupo。」 「ん？」 「何か知ってる？」 「何のことだ？」 答えるのが早すぎた。 Lilyはすぐに怪しいと気づいた。 今度はLukaを見る。 Lukaは笑顔のまま、そっと視線をそらした。 「Luka？」 「なあに？」 「今、私から目をそらしたよね？」 「そんなことないわよ。」 「絶対そらした。」 Tetoはもう限界だった。 肩がずっと震えている。 Lilyはすぐにそちらを向いた。 「Teto。」 「ぷっ——」 「笑ったでしょ！」 「笑ってない！」 「絶対笑った！」 Tetoはついに耐えきれず大笑いした。 「あははは！　ごめん！　さっきのLilyの顔、本当に面白すぎて！」 「やっぱりみんなの仕業なんじゃない！」 そのとき。 ステージ後方の巨大スクリーンが突然切り替わった。 ライブのロゴが消える。 代わりに現れたのは、まばゆい金色の文字。 Happy Birthday Lily Lilyは完全に固まった。 「え？」 ステージ上空から大量の金色の紙吹雪が降ってくる。 パンッ——！ パンッ——！ 左右から同時にクラッカーが鳴った。 最初に飛び跳ねたのはRinだった。 「お誕生日おめでとう——！」 Lenも続けて叫ぶ。 「Happy Birthday！」 Mikuは両手を高く上げた。 「Lily、誕生日おめでとう！」 「お誕生日おめでとう。」 KAITOも笑う。 MEIKOも前へ出てきた。 「だから今日のライブは、普通のライブじゃないのよ。」 Lilyはまだケーキの後ろに立ったままだった。 スクリーンを見る。 ケーキを見る。 そして最後に、周りにいる八人を見る。 「みんな……」 一瞬、何を言えばいいのかわからないようだった。 Tetoがすぐに顔を近づける。 「びっくりした？」 Lilyは振り向いてTetoを睨んだ。 「するに決まってるでしょ！」 「成功！」 TetoはすぐにRinとハイタッチした。 パン！ 「二人とも！」 Lilyは追いかけようとした。 けれど、少し動いたところでまた止まった。 あることに気づいたからだった。 客席の光まで変わっている。 それまでさまざまな色が混ざっていたペンライトが、今はほとんどすべて金黄色になっていた。 客席全体が、まるで巨大な金色の星空のようだった。 Lilyはゆっくり顔を上げる。 スクリーンの文字はまだ輝いている。 Happy Birthday Lily 口を開く。 けれど、すぐには言葉が出なかった。 Lukaが隣へ歩いてきた。 「どうしたの？」 「……これ、いつ準備したの？」 「秘密。」 Lukaは笑って答える。 「リハーサルのときには何もなかったじゃん。」 「Lilyに見つかったら、サプライズにならないでしょ。」 MEIKOが言った。 LilyはGakupoを見る。 「Gakupoも知ってたの？」 Gakupoはうなずいた。 「みんな知っていた。」 Lilyは一瞬固まる。 「全員？」 KAITOが笑った。 「全員。」 今度はMikuを見る。 Mikuはすぐにうなずいた。 「ずっと前から準備してたんだよ。」 Lenが付け加える。 「実は一番大変だったの、ケーキを用意することじゃなかったんだ。」 「じゃあ何？」 Lilyが聞く。 Rinがすぐ答えた。 「Tetoが先にバラさないようにすること！」 「ちょっと！」 再びステージ全体が笑い声に包まれた。 Lilyもついに耐えきれず笑った。 「ひどい。」 Lilyはケーキへ視線を落とした。 金色の装飾がステージライトを受けてきらきら光っている。 まだキャンドルには火がついていない。 それでも、あとでどんな光景になるのか想像できた。 「それで……」 Lilyは顔を上げた。 「ライブはこのまま続けるの？」 Mikuが目をぱちぱちさせる。 「もちろん。」 Gakupoが続けた。 「これはまだ始まりにすぎない。」 「始まり？」 Lilyはまた固まる。 Tetoがものすごく得意そうな顔をした。 「まさか、ケーキだけだと思ってた？」 Lilyは急に嫌な予感がした。 「まだ何かあるの？」 八人全員が同時に黙った。 「……」 Lilyはみんなを見る。 「ねえ。」 誰も答えない。 「ちょっと待って、その顔どういう意味？」 Rinがすぐに背を向けた。 「次の曲、準備！」 「逃げないで！」 「音楽スタート！」 「Rin！」 突然、ステージの音楽が再び流れ始めた。 Lenはもう笑いすぎて立っているのも大変そうだった。 KAITOは何事もなかったようにマイクを持ち直す。 MEIKOはまだ疑っているLilyを中央の位置へ押し戻した。 「はいはい、今日の主役。」 「まだ聞き終わってない！」 「質問はライブが終わってから。」 MikuがLilyの隣に立った。 「今日は長いよ。」 Lilyはみんなを見る。 そして、突然現れたバースデーケーキをもう一度見る。 最後に、仕方なさそうに笑った。 「わかった。」 もう一度マイクを持ち上げる。 金色のスポットライトが再びLilyを照らした。 客席からの歓声が一気に大きくなる。 Lilyは深く息を吸った。 「それじゃあ——」 笑顔を浮かべる。 「今日は最後まで、私と一緒に歌ってね！」 会場全体が一気に沸き上がった。 音楽が本格的に始まる。 そしてLilyは、まだ知らなかった。 ステージ中央に置かれたあのケーキが、 今夜最初のサプライズにすぎないことを。
