Byte had been hired to help with the gallery’s new exhibit. This was their first mistake. She was supposed to process payments, keep an eye on the paintings, and—according to Nova’s extremely specific instructions—not touch anything. Then Byte found a portrait that looked a little too much like her. Twenty minutes later, the gallery’s priceless masterpiece had whiskers. Byte tilted her head, dipped the brush back into neon green paint, and considered her work. “Hmm.” Another whisker. Perfect. When the curator finally caught her, Byte was still holding the card reader in her other hand. “Would you like to pay for the upgrade now,” she asked, “or should I send you an invoice?” The gallery has since updated its employee handbook. There is now an entire page titled BYTE.
