Seen in a low three-quarter profile from slightly below, the lone imp stands at the balcony's stone rail with his right side toward the camera, his head turned away toward the horizon so the white markings down his right cheek and right shoulder catch the last light. His right hand is raised to his lips, two fingers of the black fingerless glove with its yellow circle pinching the lit cigarette, its ember a small hot orange point; his left hand rests closed on the rail's edge, the red skull necklace hanging against the open collar of the tattered slate-gray coat whose red buttons run down the chest. One horn's black and white stripes catch a rim of light, the black spines along his head and back breaking the sky silhouette, his red tail curled loosely behind his leg. A single tear has left his yellow sclera and red iris and runs a wet line down the marked cheek, catching the horizon glow.
The balcony edge runs diagonally from the lower left corner toward the mid-right, its stone coping cool blue-gray, his boots planted apart on the paving with his weight on the back foot. Beyond the rail the world falls away into a soft-focus dusk: the sky grades from dark indigo overhead through mauve to a warm amber band along the horizon, the sun entirely gone, low clouds tinted rose and the faintest first star in the upper dark. The warm glow is the only warm light in the frame, striking the underside of his chin, the rim of the tear, the coat's shoulder and the cigarette smoke; the balcony and his front stay in cool violet shadow. The wind pushes the tattered hem and one open lapel away from the rail, the smoke dragged sideways and thinning as it goes. Palette: cool indigo, slate gray and red against the amber horizon band.
Soft, gently graduated shading on the face and eyes, film-like glow, quiet melancholy with a thread of hope.
