Seen from behind and slightly below, a single fox girl stands with her back three-quarters to the camera, her head turned so her chin rests near her right shoulder and her eyes come back over it toward the lens. Both fox ears rise from her hair, one swiveled toward the sound of the lanterns; her long hair falls forward over the far shoulder in the turn. The halloween kimono — deep black silk patterned with orange pumpkins, bats and drifting autumn leaves — has slipped from her right shoulder, the collar dropping away to bare that shoulder and the long line of her collarbone to the cool night air, the fabric caught and bunched at the crook of her right elbow where her hand holds the sleeve in place. The obi is tied at her back in a broad orange-black knot, its ends hanging. From beneath the hem and around her hips, several fluffy fox tails curl outward into the dark, their fur catching the lantern light along one edge and going soft and dim on the shadow side. Her blush sits high on her visible cheek, warm across the bridge of her nose, lips slightly parted, a faint closed-lip smile that is more embarrassed than pleased; the near eye is lowered a little shyly, the far eye wider in the turn.
Her right hand grips the pale wooden handle of a round paper lantern held low at hip height, its ribs glowing orange around a small flame; her left hand rests flat against the obi at her back. Behind her, paper lanterns hang in strings across the darkness at staggered distances, each a soft orange sphere with a black cord above it and a small tassel below, the nearest lantern large and warm in the midground, the farthest shrinking to a dim bead. They are the only light sources: warm orange light comes from behind and below, rims the top of her bare shoulder, the curve of her turned cheek, the tips of her ears, and threads through the fur of her tails, while her front, the inside of the dropped collar, and the folds of the kimono against her body fall into deep warm shadow. The lantern she holds throws a second, lower pool of light up onto the underside of her jaw and the silk at her waist. On the ground, faint reflections of the hanging lanterns lie elongated and slightly broken on the dark planks, dimmer than their sources.
Palette is black silk, pumpkin orange, amber lantern glow and the white of her fur and skin, nothing else admitted; the background is near-black so the lanterns read as floating ornaments. Shot as a cowboy shot from behind at a slight low angle, shallow depth so the nearer lanterns soften and the far ones blur to bokeh; her tails and the falling lantern light carry the detail budget. Quiet, warm, faintly bashful.
