Seen from a low angle on the deck itself, the young pirate plants his sandals wide on the sun-bleached planks and drives his whole weight forward behind a punch that leaves his shoulder — his right arm stretches out of all human proportion, rubbery and thin and taut, running diagonally from his hip to the upper-left corner of the frame in violent foreshortening, his fist huge and blurred at the edge of the shot while the arm recedes small toward his grinning body. He leans into it: rear heel dug in, knee bent, hips rotated, left arm flung back behind him for counterbalance, the open red vest swinging off his shoulders so the lean bare chest shows, the yellow sash knotted at his waist with its tail whipping sideways in the wind, blue shorts snapping around his braced thighs. His head is tilted up and toward the viewer, messy black hair blown flat back off his brow beneath the straw hat, the hat's brim biting a hard curved shadow across his face while the scar under his left eye catches the light; his mouth is wide open in a full crescent-cheeked grin, teeth showing, eyes wide and bright and fixed forward past the fist.
The ship deck fills the lower third in warm honey-grey wood with black caulking seams running in sharp perspective toward the bow, a varnished railing and rigging rope crossing the midground. Beyond the rail the open ocean burns: a hard band of white glare where the sun sits low over the water, dissolving into brilliant turquoise nearer the hull. The punch's backdraft and the bow wave throw sea spray up over the rail in a bright white arc, droplets hanging individually in the air and catching the sun as tiny points of light, pattering across the deck planks and beading on the sash. A scatter of seagulls bursts outward and upward above the rail, wings at every phase of flight, their white undersides lit and their backs in silhouette against the sky. The sun is the only light source and it comes hard from behind and slightly above the ship's stern: every figure edge is rimmed white-gold, faces toward the camera fall into warm bounced light off the planks, and long dark shadows of the railing and the boy streak forward across the deck toward the viewer. Palette is red, straw-yellow, wood-ochre and a saturated sea blue, nothing else admitted. Joyful, sun-drenched.
