The camera sits far below him and looks straight up: his tail sweeps in from the upper right of the frame, broad and heavy, its iridescent teal plates catching the surface light and breaking into violet and green along the curve, the translucent caudal fin spread wide against the open water so the light passes through it and glows. His torso is foreshortened above the tail, chest and shoulders nearer the lens, one arm folded over the other across his ribs; the left wrist with its single polished gold cuff crosses in front of the right, and the gold catches a bright rim of light while the right wrist lies bare beneath it. His silver hair hangs loose and drifts upward past his jaw in slow separate strands, one lock crossing his cheek, the rest fanned out into the water behind his head. His chin is tipped back and his eyes are half-lidded, steel-blue and bright with reflected surface light, looking up out of the frame toward the sun above the water; his mouth is a faint lopsided smirk, the raised eyebrow pulling the scar line taut. Around and above him the water goes from deep indigo at the bottom of the frame to a bright turquoise near the surface, where shafts of sunlight break into the water and fall in widening columns; the light strikes the top of his shoulders and the upper faces of his tail and leaves the underside of his jaw, the hollow of his chest and the water below him in cool shadow. Bubbles trail from the corner of his mouth and rise in a thin ladder toward the light, shrinking as they climb, and a few strands of hair and the fin edges bend in the same slow upward current.
