Seen from the side in a tight profile close-up, past the dark window at the far left of the frame: the bedroom is given over to one warm pool of lamplight, and both figures fit inside it. Aether sits upright against the tall wooden headboard, back and shoulder blades pressed flat to the boards, a pillow wedged behind his lower back, one knee raised under the blankets and the other leg stretched out, his tall broad-shouldered muscular frame filling the left two-thirds of the frame while the crown of his head stops just under the top edge. His long blonde hair is gathered into a single braid that hangs forward over his near shoulder so the loose tuft at its end rests against the pillow; the short strands between his eyes and the stray ahoge above his brow catch the lamp's edge light; his earrings hang still and his yellow eyes are shut, brows level and relaxed, mouth fully occupied. Arlecchino lies diagonally against his chest from lower right to upper left, her weight sunk into him so that his torso is the only thing holding her up: her right shoulder blade lodges against his left pectoral, her right hip presses into the crook of his lap, and the duvet is dragged up over her knees while her long white nightgown spreads across his stomach in a soft fold, its sleeveless shoulder slipping low on her upper arm. Her hair is loose and unplaited, black strands streaked white spilling across his shoulder and the pillow and a long fall of it hanging off the mattress edge behind her, with fine strands between her eyes lying over her brow. Both her arms are bare from shoulder to fingertips, no fabric at the wrist, no seam at the knuckle; her left hand has climbed onto his jaw and her fingertips are spread along the angle of it, her right hand curled loosely into the blankets at his hip. She tilts her head up and back to meet him, chin lifted, and their mouths meet in a slow deep kiss, her lips parted under his, her eyes closed and her lashes low, a faint flush along her cheek and one slack exhale visible in the softening of her throat: nothing sharp left in her face, fully at ease. His left hand is open in her hair at the back of her skull, fingers threaded through the loose black-and-white strands and slightly compressing them against her scalp; his right hand lies flat at her waist, thumb along the seam of the nightgown and fingers curving over the soft fold of white cloth, the fabric dimpling where his fingertips press. The lamp stands on the near bedside table behind them, its shade throwing the only light in the room: a warm low amber that strikes the side of his throat, her cheek, the bridge of her nose and the hem of her nightgown, while the far side of both faces and the far wall fall away into deep brown shadow and the window at the left of the frame is a flat black rectangle with a single dull reflection of the lampshade in its glass. Beyond the foot of the bed the floorboards pick up a thin band of lamplight; in the far corner, half in shadow, stands the small wooden cradle on its curved rockers with a folded blanket inside it, and beside it on a low stool rests the sewing basket, its lid ajar with thread spools and a needle cushion visible over the rim. The palette is warm lamplight amber, cream and bone-white cloth, deep brown shadow and the black-and-white of her hair; the linens are rumpled where the two bodies have settled into them, one pillow dented under his lower back and the duvet creased in a diagonal ridge from her hip to the mattress edge. Quiet, tender.
