Carthage (c. 814–146 BC) was a powerful Phoenician city-state and maritime empire founded on the coast of North Africa, in present-day Tunisia. Renowned for its formidable navy, extensive trade networks, and prosperous economy, Carthage dominated much of the western Mediterranean for centuries. Its rivalry with Rome culminated in the Punic Wars, during which commanders such as Hannibal became legendary. Although destroyed by Rome in 146 BC, Carthage left a lasting legacy in commerce, navigation, and Mediterranean history.
