In short, he's a man who designed a spacecraft which could travel any distance in space...eventually, though in its process, it would be unassailable, impenetrable and utterly unstoppable in its advance, and to do it he had to bury himself into the heart of his creation to keep it going with his own dreams spearheading its advance. The white eyes around him are Starskipper AI's which are trained on his own consciousness, allowing the ship to have benevolent and kind caretakers by the millions to ensure it is never led astray.
