Powerful plumes of dense charcoal smoke and billowing white steam surge skyward from the twin exhaust stacks, torn backward by speed into turbulent clouds that blanket the upper ridge. Low jets of pressurized white vapor shoot laterally from the cylinder cocks, violently scattering fine ballast gravel and dust across the weathered wooden ties. Golden late-afternoon sunlight strikes the locomotive from a low angle on the left, casting brilliant amber rim light along the rivets, handrails, and cylindrical curves of the boiler while leaving the opposing mechanical undercarriage in deep, oily iron shadow. Granite canyon walls and scattered alpine pines flank the winding pass under a dusty blue sky, the immense steel beast vibrating the very earth beneath the gleaming railheads. Monumental industrial power.
