empty room, open wooden sliding door, sliding door set into wall, old traditional japanese house interior, weathered timber wall, tatami floor, shoji frame, fantasy townscape through doorway, portal view, cobblestone road, road running down center, wooden buildings both sides, timber houses, old townscape, townspeople, passersby, walking figures, blue sky, white clouds, strong sunlight, god rays, no text, from below, wide shot, foreground interior in shadow The view is a wide, slightly low-angle shot from inside a dim old room, looking straight out through a wide-open wooden sliding door. The door — a lattice of aged cedar and paper panels, its lower rail grooved and worn pale by decades of sliding — has been shoved fully to the right, stacking its panels against the jamb so the opening is unobstructed, floor to lintel. The door's wall occupies the entire frame except for that bright rectangle: weathered plaster above, dark timber posts flanking the opening, the cedar threshold plank across the bottom of frame, its grain scuffed and pale where feet have crossed it. The interior this side of the threshold sits in cool shadow — unlit, understated, a strip of mat floor and the door frame itself the only foreground. Through the opening, the whole world is a town: a cobblestone road runs from the very threshold straight to the horizon, narrowing in deep perspective, its rounded stones packed and uneven, warm grey and rose, the far ones losing all definition. Timber houses crowd both sides of the road in tight unbroken ranks — dark beams, cream infill, jettied upper storeys overhanging the street, steep tiled roofs stepping further into the distance, upper windows and hanging signs the only irregularities. The entire town fits inside the door frame; nothing spills past the jambs. Along the road, passersby come and go at several depths. Nearest, walking away up the road and seen from behind at three-quarter angle, a broad-shouldered man in a coarse brown linen tunic and tan trousers, leather sandals slapping the stones, one hand loose at his side. Further along on the opposite side, walking toward the viewer, a woman in a deep green wool cloak over a cream dress, a small woven straw hat on her head; her cloak swings forward at the hem with her stride. Behind them, smaller figures — a knot of two, a lone walker — shrink along the receding street, all rendered simply, none detailed, none facing the viewer directly. The townspeople's gazes go to each other or down the road, not to the camera. Above the rooftops the sky fills the top of the door opening — a clean saturated blue, with three or four white cumulus clouds floating in loose formation, brightest where the sun strikes them, soft grey beneath. The sun is high and slightly behind the town; it pours down the street and through the doorway in a broad shaft of warm light that lands on the threshold plank and the mat just inside, the only bright thing in the shadowed foreground. The door's stacked panels cast a hard edge of shadow across the right side of the opening. Dust motes hang visible in the light shaft where it crosses the interior. Colour scheme: warm cedar browns and shadowed cool greys at the frame, saturated stone grey-rose, dark timber and cream in the town, deep green of the cloak, and a strong blue-and-white sky above — nothing else admitted. Mood: sunlit and quietly wondrous.
