Between and beyond all of it the city is a deep blue-black field of window grids, some windows lit warm amber, most dark, receding in tiers to a horizon of haze; a few distant aircraft beacons wink red. Palette is disciplined: near-black in the dress and the roof, cold blue-black in the city and the sky, and warm white-to-gold confined to the spotlight beams, the lit windows and the halo where the helicopter's lamp meets the dust. Everything else stays in shadow so the beams read as the only illumination. Fine grain across the dark areas, crisp edge on the spotlight rims, distant towers simplified to blocks of light and dark without losing their tiering. Tense, luminous.
