Between the faces the gaps open, and out of the gaps come baby hands, some fat and small, some grotesquely oversized, fingers half-curled and dangling free, each catching a separate small highlight of moonlight on the knuckles. The white dress wraps her narrow body and drops to the ground in heavy folds, and thorned vines coil around the bodice and the skirt, crossing the pale fabric and biting creases into it. Behind her the two great moth wings stand open, ash-grey and sepia with faint eye-spots and a dust of scales along the veins, the pair of them far wider than her silhouette. From the head mass burst several enormous insect limbs, jointed black chitin ridged and glossy, each ending in a claw clamped around a big curved scythe whose blade hangs across the sky; the blades are notched and dull, rimmed with pale light along their upper edges. Alongside the limbs, thorn-like tentacles writhe up out of the same mass, thin and whipping, their barbs visible in silhouette. The single light source is a low moon behind and to the left of her, so every rounded surface — the baby cheeks, the chitin ridges, the sickle backs, the crown's spines — carries a luminous rim of light while the undersides of the face cluster and the folds of the dress fall into deep brown shadow, and her thrown shadow stretches long and distorted toward the bottom of the frame across cracked earth. Muted palette of bone white, dull gold, sepia and violet-black, laid on in thick visible strokes, highlights built up bright and wet against the flat dark. Quiet dread.
