A tight head-and-shoulders portrait seen in three-quarter view from his left, the camera slightly below his jaw line so the head looms into the upper frame and the flight suit's collar fills the lower edge. He is turned about forty degrees off the lens, chin lifted a touch, weight settled on the back foot with one shoulder dropped lower than the other; a single strand of the short black hair falls forward across the brow and the rest stays flat and close to the skull. Both black eyebrows sit low and level.
The face is the whole detail budget. Where the nose should be, the skin is torn open and smooth at once, a raw stretched plane of it, crusted at the edges and wet in the centre; no nostrils, no bridge. Below it the mouth area has no lips at all, so the gum line and the upper teeth stand bare and the lower face drops away into the prosthetic jaw: a machined grey metal mandible seated into the skull, its hinge bolts driven flush into both temples, the plates joined by visible seam lines and dark grease at the joints, opening a finger's width so the exposed teeth read clearly above the metal chin. The robotic eyes are two recessed grey lenses set in scorched sockets, irises lit by a faint internal glow that spills a thin ring of light onto the surrounding torn skin. Hoses and tubes erupt from the right cheek and the temple, clamped with metal ferrules, looping down along the neck and disappearing under the suit collar; flatter wires run back from the brow into shaved patches of scalp. Scars cross the brow and the left jaw plate in pale old ridges. Blood runs from the temples, from the tube sockets and from the torn nose line, beading on the metal jaw and dripping off the chin to hang in one elongation beneath it, and where the metal is polished the blood smears in long reflective streaks rather than soaking in.
Light comes hard from upper left, a single cold source: it strikes the brow, the metal jaw's flat plane and the lens rims, throws the eye sockets and the hollow under the cheekbone into deep black, and casts the hose shadows across his own chest. Behind him the ground is an empty near-black field with no horizon and no props. Palette is disciplined to cold greys and black -- the suit, the metal, the skin -- with blood red as the only warm note, concentrated at the nose wound, the sockets and the jaw. Crosshatched hatching builds the shadows in fine parallel strokes, heavier in the sockets and under the jaw, and the light side is left as bare paper with sparse line only. Still, clinical dread.
