Captured in a gentle three-quarter view slightly from below, two girls sit nestled together between the sprawling surface roots of a massive, ancient ginkgo tree. On the right, a girl with salmon-pink hair styled with a neat side bun and ribbon leans her back securely against the rough, furrowed bark of the tree trunk. She wears clear, round wire-frame non-prescription spectacles perched on her nose bridge, her eyes lowered toward the open paperback novel cradled in both hands at chest height, thumbs holding the margins flat. Pressed closely against her side, a second girl with dark black hair fading into teal-green gradient tips and low twintails slumps in deep sleep; her head rests squarely in the hollow of the reader's shoulder, cheek gently compressing the fabric of the uniform, her eyelashes relaxed and lips softly parted in steady, quiet breathing. The reader keeps her posture steady, absorbing the sleeper's weight without shifting so as not to wake her. Above them, a dense canopy of brilliant fan-shaped ginkgo leaves glows under warm late-afternoon sunlight, casting shifting patches of dappled light across their laps, hair, and the dense yellow leaf carpet covering the ground. The shadow of an overhead branch cuts sharp and clean across the flat white paper of the open book, while diffusing softly over the rounded folds of their shoulders and sleeves, and a single fallen yellow leaf rests undisturbed upon the dark hair of the sleeping girl. Tender, autumnal peace.
