A tall gothic scene staged inside a carved stone arch like an altarpiece: the alcove's field is a flat consuming crimson, and against it looms an enormous marble saint — headless, the neck a clean break — its heavy robes and open reaching hands painted entirely in cold electric blue as though lit by moonlight from somewhere the red cannot touch, one stone arm extended down and outward in blessing over what happens beneath it. At the statue's feet stands a white-haired vampire in an ornate black military uniform — high gold-braided collar, aiguillettes and layered gold chains, a blue-jeweled clasp, white fur draped over one shoulder, long silver hair spilling past his chest — his eyes flat glowing red, a dark mole under one eye, pointed ears, and fresh blood smeared from the corner of his mouth down his chin. In his arms a brown-haired boy hangs limp, slumped face-down over the vampire's shoulder and arm, head lolling so only his nape and mussed hair show, a thin red sash or ribbon trailing from his waist to the floor like a run of blood; the vampire's pale hand with long sharpened nails presses the boy's back, the other hand held open and relaxed at his side, unhurried, the feeding just finished. The lighting splits the world in two temperatures — everything stone and saint is blue, everything mortal is warm-pale and black, the red field owning the space between — with the statue's missing head positioned directly above the vampire's own, so he stands in for it. The arch's border is carved with worn scrollwork in grey-violet, and a curved colonnaded step base runs along the bottom edge. Paint handling is loose and confident, thick visible strokes in the statue's drapery, edges sharpening only at the vampire's face, the blood, and the gold.
